The monument of Admiral S. Makarov
Nikolayev was founded in July 1, 1788 as a shipyard, at the confluence of the Ingul and the Yuzhny Bug rivers.

The city got its name in 1789 after Saint Nicholas, the Miracle -Worker, and the patron of sailors.


Nowadays Nikolayev is a large administrative, industrial, cultural and scientific centre in the South of Ukraine.

More than 500 thousand inhabitants live in the city. Shipbuilding, machine building, light, food and other industries are developed here.
