Staff in the Oxford School of Hospitality Management are actively involved in academic research in a number of focused areas. Their research activity and publications are characterised by their application to specific industry sectors and their integration with the School's extensive consultancy services.

    Consultancy


    The Scool has an excellent reputation for the quality of its consultancy and contracted research with external companies and organisations. Major projects have included consumer trials for companies including Mars, Marks and Spencer, and Proctor and Gamble. We have considerable experience of projects in management accounting and financial management, and clients have included Holiday Inn Worldwide, the Savoy Hotel Group, Queens Moat Houses and Ciga Hotels. Other clients have included Scher International and Thorn EMI. We have also recently completed a study of the attitudes of managers and tenants to training for Hydes Anvil Brewery, Manchester. We have worked extensively with academic and commercial organisations abroad. In a major project supported by the British Council, we are currently working on curriculum and resource development for hotel and restaurant management education in Bulgaria.


    Programmes of Study


    The School offers a full portfolio of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It is one of the leading centres in the world for postgraduate provision in hospitality management. At undergraduate level our modular programme offers full and part-time opportunities leading to honours degrees in Hotel and Restaurant Management, International Hospitality Management and a joint honours programme in Hospitality Management Studies in combination with one from over 100 second fields of study. The portfolio of taught master’s degrees includes the MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management, International Hotel and Resort Management and MSc in International Tourism Marketing.

    An AMBA accredited MBA programme is available through the Business School.

    The School is also a leading partner in the "University for Industry ... hospitality worldwide" which delivers undergraduate and postgraduate learning through the workplace. All masters degree students are required to complete a dissertation or project, many of which contribute the research focus areas.

    We have an impressive international reputation for the quality of its higher degrees by research (MPhil/PhD). The research strategy is highly focused and all research students are required to conduct research in areas that contribute to this strategy. Students on the research programme are investigating areas including strategy implementation, emotional labour, financial decision making, diversity management and relationship marketing.

    MSc in International Hotel and Tourism Management
    Full-time study


    This EPAS accredited specialist MSc programme is suitable for students who have a very good bachelor’s degree in hospitality and/or tourism management, and a minimum of one year’s relevant, full-time work experience.

    This programme attracts professional students who want to prepare for an international career with the world’s leading hotel and tourism companies. Our aim is to provide you with intellectual and managerial development, and to develop your awareness of culture from multiple perspectives. These are essential qualities for effective international hotel and tourism management. You will learn about approaches to management decision making, critical evaluation, reflective practice, and strategic and tactical analysis to solve international business problems in our industry. You can choose to focus on a specific aspect of international hotel and resort management in your studies – for example entrepreneurship, environmental issues, the internet or revenue management – or the management functions of accounting and finance, marketing or human resource management. You can also focus on a specific sector of the industry in some of your modules. Alternatively you can adopt a broader approach to your education and not specialise – the choice is yours. You can choose to study aspects of complementary services such as conferences, events, extended stay, leisure and sporting activities and time share management in some of your modules – as well as learning more about the core business of accommodation, food and beverage studies. You build on your previous knowledge and learn about costs, volume and profit analysis in Strategic Management Accounting, the influential role of culture in International Human Resource Management and Marketing Across Cultures, and how complexity theory helps us understand the dynamics of strategic choices in Tourism Industry Dynamics and Strategy.

    A choice of electives includes an Intercultural Skills and an Internet Strategies module and the opportunity to study a specific hospitality/tourism topic in depth in the Contemporary Issues and Dissertation modules. This can lead to a named award in Finance, Human Resource Management or Marketing. Our innovative learning experience includes multi-cultural group work, theatre role plays, live case studies, the opportunity to create your own brand and an international visiting speaker programme.

    The programme enables students to embark on careers in food and beverage management, finance, human resources, marketing and general management with companies like Accor, Compass, Carnival, Four Seasons, Hilton, Hyatt, ICHG (InterContinental), Mandarin Oriental, Marriott, Rezidor, Sodexho, Sol Melia, Starwood and TUI.     MSc in International Hospitality, Events and Tourism Management
    Full-time study


    This MSc Programme provides an opportunity for honours graduates from unrelated disciplines such as art, economics, history, languages & linguistics, law and politics to study travel and tourism at the postgraduate level. The programme provides a broad introduction to the hospitality and tourism industry for graduates aiming for a management career in this exciting, global, people-orientated career.

    You learn the key concepts which drive hospitality operations management, the multiple contexts of the tourism and hospitality industry, the psychology of tourist behaviour and how to create a marketing plan for a tourism/hospitality concept. There is a choice of electives, including an Intercultural Skills and an Internet Strategies module, and the opportunity to study a specific hospitality/tourism topic in depth in the Contemporary Issues and Dissertation modules.

    Higher Degrees by Research
    We have an impressive international reputation for the quality of its higher degrees by research. Postgraduate students can study at MPhil and PhD level in a number of specialist fields which are highly relevant to the strategic development of the hospitality and tourism industries.

    Research Degrees
    There are opportunities for full-time and part-time students to work with us towards postgraduate research degrees (MPhil or PhD) and to contribute to the important work we are undertaking. All research students are expected to follow a programme of research training and other taught courses as agreed with their Director of Studies.

    Our strategy has been to focus its research in the areas described opposite. All applications to the research degree programme are considered in terms of the extent to which proposed research will contribute to the development of these areas.
