The EIFS conducts analyses, expert studies, empirical research, scenarios required by the clients, provides aid in the formulation of various development strategies. It aims also in the commissioned studies at concentrating on issues of prime strategic importance for Estonia and its future. In the first years, the Institute concentrated on the formulation of 3-5-year economic prognoses and corresponding recommended programmes of action. In recent years, the Institute has been more active in the field of synthetic inter-disciplinary and long-term projects (Estonia 2010, Tallinn 2010).

Dependent on the purpose and scope of the projects, the Institute also conducts opinion polls within the corresponding projects and works out the necessary methodics. Thanks to this the EIFS possesses several data bases, reflecting, for example, the development and state of the Estonian entrepreneurship, as well as social stratification.

The following is a short overview of research teams and topics.

    1. Social work professional growth and professionalism

Research focuses on education and training of social workers, professional development or professional growth as a process of maintaining and advancing the competence of social workers, in order to ensure that social workers with academic education cope with their tasks in transitional society. The studies carried out in the framework of the research direction focus on the developmental aspects of social work as a new profession in Estonian society, and on the questions of social workers professional development or professional growth. Professional growth is seen as an unavoidable process in order to maintain and advance competence in order to ensure that social workers cope with their tasks.

    2. Child protection policy and guaranteeing the welfare of children

The study indicated that the most common reason for not progressing at school is the inability or unwillingness of home to prepare the child for school and support him in the studies. Based on the results of the study, it was suggested that the Ministry of Education should guarantee the preparation of all children for school at children’s institutions. The subsequent study concentrated on the creation of student homes, protection of these children’s rights to basic education, satisfaction of their need for safe learning environment and for support in study process. 3. Special need and social inequality in society

The objective of the research was to get an overview of the dynamics of the main public health indicators in Estonia during the period of political and socio-economic changes on the bases of health care statistics, survey of the population and well-being studies compared to the indicators of other countries. Mental health of Estonian population has become an important problem, detailed analysis of which was completed in the form of the document on Estonian mental health bases.

    4. Development of Estonian senior policy: coping of the elderly and need for services

In the framework of the research direction studies have been carried out under the supervision of prof T. Tulva about the well-being of the elderly from physical, economic, emotional and social aspect. The latest studies focus on the gender phenomenon of ageing and on the questions of coping of single elderly.
