T. Karjahärm, 7 researches are engaged) is an interdisciplinary research project (2002–2006). It involves studies of the formation of national and regional identity in local (provincial) and global (European) levels and aspects, from medieval era to nowadays. The main focus lies in the politics, culture, economy and social relations. The most important problems are: Estonia and outer world, Estonians in the medieval town, culture and social conditions in the 20th century, Estonia (Baltic States) in international relations 1920–1940, foreign trade, the identity of Siberian Estonians. Land, Sea and People: Estonia on its way from the Iron Age to the Medieval Period. North-Estonia, West-Estonia and Estonian islands 600–1600 AD In frames of the Project, the development of North- and West-Estonia and the islands during the period 600–1600 AD is considered, paying main attention to the transition processes during the change from pre-conquest society to medieval feudal structures. Four main aspects of development – changes in the pattern of cultural landscape, economy, social relations and ideology – are treated in close connection to each other. Though predominantly based on archaeological evidence, the research is interdisciplinary. Special attention is paid to differences in the development of Estonian regions, and to the problems of continuity. Familiar and Foreign: Problems of Identity in Estonian Earlier Art Amidst International Artistic Styles Liturgy and Images in Estonian Medieval Churches Carried out by Department of Art History Research in the Dept. of Art History is characterised by interdisciplinary approach. This is conditioned by the Department’s position as a part of the Institute of History and by close co-operation with historians and archaeologists. Main fields of research: medieval art in the Baltic Sea countries; medieval art and political history in Estonia; medieval Tallinn (art, social history, history of mentality); Baltic German culture in Estonia; social and architectural history of the Estonian manors. Staff: Prof. Kersti Markus (head of the dept.); senior researchers: Ants Hein, Ph.D. and Anu Mänd, Ph.D.; assistant: Helen Bome, M.A. Interaction between the natural environment and man from the geographical, historical and technological aspect (project leader PhD Lembi Lõugas, 8 researches are engaged) The project, carrying out interdisciplinary fundamental studies, is focused on establishing the impact of environment to the formation of human populations and the impact of human activity to environment through time. The aim is to specify the historical and geographical development of local fauna and flora and the cultural landscapes. Also, the development of palaeopopulations of Estonians is studied: anthropo- and ethnogenetical, systematical, morphological and ecological development. Within the investigations of ancient technology the time of introduction and use of new materials (stone, bone, clay and metals), their processing technologies and development are studied. The formation of biotechnology is observed against the background of the dynamics of animal breeding and the introduction of cultivated plants. Centre for Medieval Studies Tallinn Centre for Medieval Studies has three main aims: (1) to create an innovative and supportive forum for scholars working with the Middle Ages; (2) to coordinate, promote and offer information about medieval studies in Estonia; and (3) to encourage and initiate interdisciplinary research and collaboration. The prime emphasis in the Centre's research interests is placed upon the medieval Europeanization process and the cross-cultural interaction in the frontier areas, with a special focus on comparative research into the political, social, economic, cultural and religious assimilation of the Baltic Sea region (10th-16th centuries). The Centre takes actively part in national and international scientific cooperation; regularly holds seminars, lecture-series and conferences; launches research projects; and develops multidisciplinary curricula for academic training in medieval studies at Tallinn University. The Centre was officially formed in 2005 and it associates researchers and postgraduate students from various universities and research institutions, and from a wide range of disciplines, such as history, archaeology, art history, theology, and folklore and literature studies.
