Heapost, L. 2000. A Population Genetic Characterization of Estonians. Anthropologischer Anzeiger 58/2, 137-154. This paper discusses the genetic characterization of Estonians on the basis of eight blood group systems, and the traits of PTC tasting and colour blindness in 40 Estonian population samples from various parts of the country. Estonians reveal closest similarities to the nearest neighbouring populations, regardless of their language group. The genetic heterogeneity and antagonistic traits in Estonians seem to be traces of the original genetic structure of Finno-Ugric ancestor populations which were neither Mongoloid nor Caucasoid.

Hein, Ants (2003). Eesti mõisaarhitektuur. Historitsismist juugendini. [Gutsarchitektur in Estland. Vom Historismus bis zum Jugendstil]. Tallinn: Hattorpe, 2003. 374 pp. ISBN 9985-9073-2-9. In Estonian, with a summary in German.
This monograph analyses the development of the Estonian manor architecture from 1830 to 1918. In this period, more than 310 manor houses and around 4600 side buildings were erected. In spite of the quantity of surviving houses, this period has deserved little scholarly attention thus far. The author examines the manor architecture in the general context of the aesthetic and social values of the time. In addition to the manor houses, the history and development of the side buildings (barns, spirit factories, etc.) and the parks are also investigated. The book also includes passages from the memoirs of the manor lords. The monograph is richly illustrated and provided with an extensive summary in German.

Ilmjärv, M. (2004). Silent Submission. Formation of Foreign Policy of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Period from Mid-1920-s to Annexation in 1940. Acta Iniversitatis Stockholmiensis. Studia Baltica Stockholmiensia 24, Stockholm: Stockholm University, Department of History, 2004, 592 pp. ISBN 91-22-02086-1. ISBN 0282-5066.
The book provides answers to the following questions: what prevented the Baltic states from cooperating politically and militarily; what kind of relations existed between the Baltic states and the great powers, what was implied by the policy of neutrality, declared in the second half off 1930-s. It presents a clearer picture of the factors leading to the loss on independence of three Baltic states in 1940.

Ilves, K. 2004. Seaman’s perspective in landscape archaeology. Landing sites on the maritime cultural landscape. – Eesti Arheoloogiaajakiri / Estonian Journal of Archaeology 8: 2. Special issue on maritime landscapes. Guest editor Marika Mägi, 163-180. In English.
The article is published in a special issue of the Project, dedicated to maritime landscapes. In it the seaman’s perspective on coastal landscape, disembarking and finding suitable places for it are treated. The author insists that perspectives from land and from sea are mutually important for interpreting maritime cultural landscape; the perspective from the water-side requires good knowledge of local waters and seafaring skills; the practical use of a sea vessel could improve the understanding even more.

Lõugas, L.; Ukkonen, P. & Jungner, H. 2002. Dating the extinction of European mammoths: new evidence from Estonia. Quaternary Science Reviews 21/12-13. 1347-1354.
Five mammoth molars, four pieces of tusk and one bone fragment found in different parts of Estonia were radiocarbon dated using the AMS method. Most of the remains originate from an ice-free period during the Early Weichselian or early Middle Weichselian. Two molars from Puurmani, central Estonia gave an age of ca 10,000 BP, suggesting a late relict mammoth population living in northeast Europe during the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene transition.

While subject to a degree of Scandinavian influence, the festival culture of Livonian cities such as Riga, Reval (Tallinn), and Dorpat (Tartu) substantially overlapped with that of other German-speaking areas, not least the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany. The major part of the book is devoted to the main annual festivals of the merchants’ guilds: Christmas, Carnival, the popinjay shoot, and the May Count celebrations. There follows an analysis of specific aspects of the festivals: spatial contexts, finances, food and drink, entertainments (dances, jousts, games), customs and rituals. There is also a concluding glance at changes in festival culture after the Reformation.
