Over the past few decades the demand for East European area experts has been steadily growing. Representatives from business, research, politics, and civil service all agree that such a demand exists. Yet pertinent education and training remain scarce. Freie Universität Berlin offers East European Studies Online (EES Online) - an award-winning distance learning program that enables you to continue your professional path and at the same time open up new career perspectives. The whole program comprises 120 ECTS credit points. EES Online is an accredited two-year full-time Master of Arts program; the language of instruction is English. Our specially designed distance-learning program is based on state-of-the-art communication technology. It allows you to adjust your studies individually.
Our Master’s program
The EES Online program offers you in-depth knowledge of a variety of aspects concerning the region. The course of studies provides the knowledge needed for employment with East European relevance. You will be qualified to work for NGOs, international organizations, and governmental agencies or private enterprises and also qualified to pursue further scientific work.
East European Studies Online was named one of Germany's 10 best international Master’s programs by two renowned German organizations for science and teaching, namely Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), in December 2006. It was the only online study program to receive this award.
Program director Dr. Klaus Segbers, professor of political science at Freie Universität Berlin, has successfully directed several projects and programs related to international relations and/or Eastern Europe over the last few years.
Program components
The program is set out to be multidisciplinary.
Students of EES Online will be trained to analyze and evaluate specific issues related to Eastern Europe from different disciplinary angles. They will be taught to assess developments within their respective political, social, legal, economic, historical and cultural contexts.
EES Online students will acquire skills to approach regional topics through specifically tailored modules. Thereby will students also become familiarized with innovative information technology and research tools. .

The Center for Global Politics is organized by Prof. Dr. Klaus Segbers at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Freie Universität Berlin. Our programs enable students worldwide to pursue studies or continue education at FU Berlin and its partners.
