This dynamic environment is directly transmitted into the classroom, where we expect to see you as well. The Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) is one of the leading Economic & Business Schools in Europe, as well as the most prestigious University of its kind in Greece. A recent ranking published by GMAC, the organization that conducts the GMAT test, places AUEB in the No. 3 position in Europe, and in the No 6 position internationally, based on the number of European GMAT scores sent directly to schools for the year 2005. AUEB was originally founded in 1920 under the name of Athens School of Commercial Studies. Six years later it was renamed as the Athens School of Economics and Business, a name that was retained until 1989. It is the third oldest Higher Education Institution in Greece and the oldest in the general fields of Economics and Business. In 1989, the University was divided in six departments. From 1999 onwards, the AUEB has developed even further and nowadays it offers eight (8) undergraduate programmes and twenty five (25) postgraduate programmes. The Master's Programmes have been in operation since 1978 for Economics and since 1985 for Business Administration. The Research Centre of the University was established in 1983. It aims at supporting the research carried out by Faculty members in the general fields of economics, management and computing with an emphasis on the study of the Greek economy and the Greek society in general. Regular training and executive seminars are organised by the Centre with the objective of upgrading the education of unemployed university graduates and of those employed in both the public and private sectors of the Greek economy. A regular workshop, attended by teaching and research faculty and invited specialists from universities, government agencies, international organisations and private industry, is held at the Centre. At this workshop, progress reports of research projects under way as well as completed research work are presented and discussed. In addition, the Centre assists the University in providing organisational support for national and international conferences. The AUEB students have access to a well organised library that was founded in 1928 and in 1990 it experienced a massive modernization and IT automation, partly financed by the European Community. Today it is fully automated, including OPAC, SDI, acquisitions, bar-code-based lending, etc. and uses the integrated library automation system Equilibrium-Libreto. It is one of the largest libraries in Economics and Business Administration in the Balkans. The library comprises more than 100,000 book titles and more than 1,000 printed academic journal titles covering areas of Economics, International and European Economic Studies, Business Administration, Management Science and Marketing, Informatics, Statistics, Accounting and Finance and Management and Technology. The library also offers 150 CD-ROMs. Access to these is available from all library departments via the CD-RΟΜ network. In the library students can find daily business magazines and journals in the areas of economics and business. In addition, the AUEB Library participates in a consortium for national and international inter-library loans. Thus, the students have access to the libraries of the Centre for Planning and Economic Research, the Bank of Greece, the National Documentation Centre, as well as to several libraries in Europe. As a student of AUEB you will also have access to the University’s main computer centre, one of the largest and most up-to-date computer centre facilities in the country and in the Balkan region. The centre, tailored for the research and teaching needs of the University, comprises extensive hardware and software facilities. In a research carried out by Der Spiegel magazine among 500 European Universities, AUEB ranked in the top 5% being listed in the 25th place. At the same time, in the field of Econometrics, AUEB comes internationally in the 48th place according to the Journal of Econometric Theory. Not to mention the fact that AUEB has been selected by the European Union as the Centre of Excellence for European Studies in Greece |
