Admission to the International Master’s in Civil Engineering requires a 1st cycle Italian degree or equivalent bachelor achieved at legally recognised Institutions in Italy or abroad. It also requires a background in the subjects of Civil Engineering:
Hydraulics and hydraulic works; Land survey; Transportation and Road Engineering; Geotechnical Engineering; Structural Engineering.
Knowledge of the English language (level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference) is also required, which can be certified by:
- University of Bologna Linguistic Centre (CLA-UNIBO);
- Internationally recognised language certifications, such as TOEFL, IELTS, etc. (minimum scores to be considered equivalent to B2 level being the following: IELTS 5,5; TOEFL PBT 507-557; TOEFL CBT 180-217; TOEFL IBT 80-99; Cambridge First Certificate (FCE); Trinity College of London ISE II),
- Entitled English schools.
Graduates in a degree programme taught in English, English native speakers and graduates in English language and literature or equivalent are exempted from this assessment. The Degree Programme may require students to recover any initial deficit, if their knowledge of the English language is below the B2 level on admission. For Non-EU citizens, an annual quota of places is set each year by the University of Bologna. For the Master’s in Civil Engineering, in the academic year 2017/2018, a maximum of 60 Non-EU students will be accepted.
Please note: no entrance exam nor Italian proficiency test are required for the Master’s Degree Programme in Civil Engineering.

The International Master’s in Civil Engineering is a graduate programme (Laurea Magistrale) which aims at educating professionals with the necessary in-depth scientific and technical knowledge in the field of civil engineering.
The programme is intended to provide students with firm technical bases while nurturing decision-making and leadership potential. It prepares graduates to practice their profession at an advanced level and with a unique exposure to an international environment to better understand global issues of civil engineering.
The core modules, common for all students (1st year), aim at consolidating fundamentals and improving modelling capabilities in the classical areas of Civil Engineering such as structural mechanics and engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, soil mechanics, road design and transportation.

In order to obtain the Master Degree (Laurea Magistrale), students must successfully complete all the courses and discuss a final dissertation, for a minimum of 120 Credits (ECTS).
The courses will be organized with in-class teaching activities, practice, design and laboratory activities. The final exam consists in the public discussion of a dissertation (the master thesis).
Thanks to Dual Degree agreements, students can obtain two qualifications in two years. The partners are Columbia University (New York, USA); University of Miami (Florida, USA); Université de Liège (Belgium).
Furthermore, international agreements allow students to spend part of their studies abroad (for exams, research, or internships).

The mission of the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) is to create and develop advanced research in the areas of civil, chemical, environmental and materials engineering, starting from evaluation, design, construction and service of manmade structures and infrastructures (including industrial production facilities), through the study and characterization of the constituent materials, up to the environmental analysis and impact assessment of the footprint on the territory and the environment.
More than 320 people currently team up to DICAM research activities: approximately 105 academic staff, 45 technical, administrative and librarian staff and 174 Ph.D. students, research assistants and fellows.
The Department is based in the two main locations of the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna, the historical building of downtown Bologna and the new building in the strategic urban development of Via Terracini, in the close outskirt of the historical downtown, which houses the largest part of the Laboratory facilities and many modern offices for Researchers and Professors. However, staff’s activity also takes place at the Campuses of Cesena and Ravenna. The Department encompasses 11 specialized laboratories, which represent a large propulsive element to the research in all the specific disciplines, as well as an essential element for the teaching activities.
The high quality, interdisciplinary nature and collaborative work of the research groups enable the Department to provide, worldwide, an effective answer to the demands of today’s modern society and of professional world.
