    About the Programme

    The Master of Public Management (MPM) offered by SDA Bocconi is a graduate course taught in the English language to graduate students world-wide. The MPM prepares individuals for careers as managers, analysts, consultants and policy advisors in government institutions, agencies and other organisations closely associated with the public sector.

    MPM students will develop practical public management skills in a framework that integrates pure public management subjects (strategic management, organisation, marketing, etc.) with other relevant disciplines (economics, public policy, law and quantitative methods).

    Through an itinerary comprising 10 months of classroom activities and a three-months internship, each participant will:
    • achieve substantial competencies in the management of public and public-related organisations;
    • gain experience in applying qualitative and quantitative methods to promote and manage change at the organisational and policy level;
    • understand the political, economic and social context of public management from an international perspective;
    • use management and governance tools to support the design implementation and evaluation of public policies (with a focus on the delivery of public services);
    • develop the leadership and problem solving skills required to work in a complex professional environment. People who are looking for a managerial development in the public sector, consultancy or related fields can take advantage of this unique approach which perfectly combines academic innovative learning with dynamic team work and a direct approach to the professional world.
    The MPM is an intensive, full time course. It requires the total dedication of participants as well as the maximum intellectual commitment. Attendance is compulsory 5 days a week, but the commitment also extends to study outside of class hours. This master is therefore incompatible with any kind of professional activity.

    The MPM program is offered in English. In order to attend the MPM program, each participant must demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language.

    The program stimulates an engaging and rewarding learning process aimed at developing professional knowledge, skills and attitudes. Therefore, the teaching involves a mixture of lectures and practical classes, together with group work and seminars with an emphasis on discussion and problem solving. These methods provide students with opportunities for active and critical participation, maintaining a high level of attention and involvement. Besides the normal teaching activities, the MPM program also includes special initiatives aimed at enabling participants to assimilate the content of the courses and apply it to real cases.

    The learning process of each student is constantly assessed by various means, such as written examinations, simulation exercises, group and individual projects. The individual assessment takes numerous factors into account: level of knowledge, skill in analysis and synthesis, contribution to group learning, planning abilities, leadership qualities and spirit of initiative.

    In order to help students to get the best from their learning process, each participant is assigned a tutor with specific research expertise in public management. Tutors supervise participants throughout the programme and offer personalised advice on specific problems participants may have.

    The Master of Public Management is accredited by the European Association for Public Administration Accreditation (EAPAA).

    About the School and University

    Universitą Commerciale "Luigi Bocconi"

    Universitą Commerciale "Luigi Bocconi" was established in 1902 with a generous endowment from Ferdinando Bocconi, a wealthy merchant who thereby meant to commemorate his son disappeared in battle overseas. Bocconi thus became the first Italian institution of higher education to grant a degree in economics.

    In keeping with the ideals of its founders, Bocconi University seeks to address the research and education needs of the national, European, and global economic system, by assiduously favouring cultural progress, international exchange, and economic integration.

    Therefore, the University promotes both economic advancement and civic values, by providing students with solid intellectual and professional training, so that they can contribute to the innovation and development of Italian and European businesses. Accordingly, Bocconi is committed to nurture both an analytical and an ethical mindset in its graduates. Bocconi views culture and science as the cornerstones for the moral and economic renewal of Italy.

    Bocconi is a research university of international standing. By means of basic and applied research funded by national and supranational organizations, Bocconi makes its contribution to the progress of business and economic science. By partaking in a European and global network of international centres of economic knowledge, Bocconi exchanges faculty and cooperates on large projects with several like-minded European and American universities and business schools. By cultivating close relations with firms, agencies, and their management and officials, Bocconi costantly interacts with the business and economic environment to assess new issues, implement new techniques, and start new research endeavours.

    Bocconi University conceives education as an ongoing process which does not end with graduation, but spans the entire professional life of an individual. To this aim, Bocconi provides integrated offerings in undergraduate, graduate, and post-experience education. Bocconi University grants BAs, MBAs and PhDs in Management, Economics, Statistics, and other disciplines. It also administers hundreds of advanced courses to managers and professionals in all realms of private and public management.

    SDA Bocconi School of Management

    SDA Bocconi School of Management was founded in 1971 by Universitą Bocconi. After being a pioneer in Italy, it today enjoys international recognition as a leading management school, present in the most important rankings.

    Its mission is to educate men and women ready to act anywhere in the world, using their knowledge and imagination.

    Many economic and business leaders have passed through Bocconi; a number of the world’s top 100 economists graduated here. And every year, the MBA and Master programmes in English attract a growing number of foreign students to SDA.

    SDA Bocconi dedicates energy and resources to creating value and spreading values. Proof of this are its research, teaching and relations with the scientific, business and institutional communities. It is exemplified by its exchanges, international approach, critical spirit, pragmatism, curiosity and strength to innovate. Knowledge and imagination are the shared pride and heritage of the faculty, its students, and thousands of alumni around the world.

    Another reason for the appeal of SDA Bocconi is being in the centre of Milan, the linchpin of the Italian economy, the country’s industrial and financial heart, and one of the planet’s design capitals. Men and women who come to SDA Bocconi have first-hand experience of education open to the world on a campus that, more than just a physical location, measurable in square metres, offers a series of horizons and opportunities to penetrate the core of the global economy through accredited and highly appreciated courses. In 1998, SDA Bocconi was the first institution in Italy to obtain EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation.

    With a Faculty of more than 600 teachers and researchers, the School supports and renews over 1,000 initiatives every year. It operates on all the strategic fronts of education: executive courses, tailor-made courses, specialist master degrees and bilingual MBA programmes. This is why more than 20,000 participants choose SDA Bocconi every year.

    SDA Bocconi for Public Administration

    Since 1976 SDA Bocconi School of Management has been elaborating and disseminating management knowledge and competencies, as well as promoting the implementation of managerial approaches and innovation in the public sector.

    Within SDA Bocconi, a full time faculty of professors and researchers is in charge of the development of advanced training programs and initiatives on Public Administration. These courses (Masters, short and long term programs) share the same vision on the key role of management in international organizations, public bodies, healthcare structures and NGOs. Research activities carried out by the School provide the foundations for teaching material, which is tailored to address participants' specific requirements: case studies, simulation models and analysis grids become the basis for effective and innovative learning activities. The Public Management faculty is fully involved in international activities and networks such as the Public and Non Profit Division of the Academy of Management, the European Group of Public Administration – EGPA, the International Research Symposium on Public Management, IRSPM.
