    Accommodation The University of Łódź has 11 student dormitories including:
    10 dormitories for full-time students (with separate places in XIV DS for students of School of Polish for Foreign Students), where there are 4224 residential places and 1 dormitory for extramural students.
    Accommodation in a student house for full-time students range from 170 - 310 PLN per month.
    Fees There is no fee for Full-time courses for Polish students. The exception from this rule applies to students who prolong their studies, repeat subjects or are reactivated after being crossed out of the list of students, in such cases they are charged according to the prices set by the authorities of University.

    The fees for Evening Studies for Polish students are as following (depends on field): from 3400 PLN/year to 5000 PLN/year.

    The fees for Extramural Studies for Polish students are as follows (depends on field): from 2500 PLN/year to 4800 PLN/year.

    Tuition fee for Foreign Students with polish language, who want to study at the University of Łódź, is 3000 Euro/year.
    Financial assistance Foreign students may obtain financial aid through the Polish Government and the financial support from Łódź University
    Full-time Polish students in difficult material conditions can receive following financial support: social scholarships social grants for disabled persons, subsidized meals in the students' canteens, subsidized accommodation welfare.
    Admission requirements Foreign applicants seeking admission to Łódź University must meet the requirements laid down by Polish law and the University's regulations.

    Documents to be submitted by foreigners requesting enrolment at the University of Łódź:
    1. Legalisation of the secondary school certificate or of the apostle (translation into the Polish language of an equivalent value of a certificate received abroad with a certificate received in Poland);
    2. Document confirming the candidate's visit status and country of origin;
    3. Application questionnaire (can be received from the International Students Office or from the website);
    4. Medical certificate stating that there are no factors indicating that the candidate cannot study at a chosen major;
    5. Health insurance policy in case of sickness or consequence of accident valid for education period in Poland or European Health Insurance Card. It is also possible to purchase Polish public health insurance at a regional branch of the National Health Fund;
    6. 3 photographs.

    If candidate seeks enrolment to the second or post-graduate degree courses, the candidate is obliged to submit, among other things, a diploma of completing the first-degree courses confirmed by the Faculty Council of the Faculty at which the candidate wishes to continue education, a medical certificate, 3 photographs, an application questionnaire, and a document confirming the candidate's visit status and country of origin.

    MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN ADMINISTRATION
    (FACULTY OF LAW AND ADMINISTRATION)


    Description:

    This postgraduate Master’s degree programme is organized at the University of Lodz by the Faculty of Law and Administration and prepares students for a career in international and internal administration (central or local government, business administration). The programme of the studies includes lectures on international law, legislation of the European Union, Polish domestic law, management and the organization of the civil service. In the course of the studies participants acquire professional knowledge that enables them to work at the offices of the public administration, as well as, in the institutions of the European Union. The graduates are awarded an M.A. degree in Administration.

    Candidates profile:

    This programme is predominantly addressed to international students that are interested in studying in Poland – the New Member State of the European Union and the biggest country in Central and Eastern Europe. Studies are designed for higher education graduates - first and second level, all specializations, from EU and other countries.     BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
    (FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS)


    Description:

    This is a three-year programme of studies leading to the B.Sc. degree (undergraduate) in the area of Computer Science held at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Lodz. The programme includes computer science (algorithms and programming, operating systems, networks, databases, computer graphics) and basics of mathematics (logic, analysis, algebra with geometry, discrete mathematics, probability). Courses are conducted in the form of lectures (lec.), tutorials (tut.) and practical exercises in the laboratories (lab.). The total number of hours – 1770, ECTS credits -170.

    Graduates of the first level Computer Science programme acquire knowledge and skills in the area of:

    - implementation and verification of computer software components
    - supervision of middle-sized computer systems
    - practical use of computer tools
    - programming

    Typical graduate can find employment as a supervisor of computer systems, as a programmer, operator and service attendant of information systems and, after meeting additional requirements, he can also be employed as a Computer Science teacher.

    Candidates profile:

    The candidates should be interested and naturally gifted in computer science and mathematics.

    MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN COMPUTER SCIENCE (FACULTY OF MATHEMATICS)

    Description:

    These are full-time, two-year studies leading to the Mater’s degree in the area of Computer Science. The programme includes algorithms analysis, network programming and distributed systems, advanced databases, internet portals, artificial intelligence, neural networks and genetic algorithms. Courses are conducted in the form of lectures (lec.), tutorials (tut.) and practical exercises in the laboratories (lab.). The total number of hours – 960, ECTS credits -105.

    The graduates of this programme will have:

    - knowledge of the rudiments in Computer Science that enables them to solve computer problems single-handedly and implement solutions
    - the understanding of computer’ specification and complexity
    - skills in preparation, implementation and verification of computer software
    - ability to use computer tools in practice and proficiency in programming
    - knowledge which enables fast adaptation to dynamically changing computer reality

    A typical graduate can find employment as a researcher, software designer and developer, head of programmer teams, supervisor of complex information systems, computer network designer, developer and administrator or computer security system specialist.

    MASTER'S DEGREE IN INFORMATICS AND ECONOMETRICS (FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND SOCIOLOGY)

    Description:

    This is a two-year postgraduate Master’s degree programme offered at the University of Lodz by the Institute of Econometrics and Statistics. These studies include teaching on methods and tools in mathematics, statistics and econometrics used in advanced analysis of economic phenomena at micro- and macro level. The programme of the studies is a response to the need of modern labour market where employees with sound analytical skills can work as experts and use mathematical, statistical and econometric techniques as well as computer skills to produce value-added projects. One of the advantages of the programme is that it is lead by qualified academic teachers, both from Poland and abroad – e.g. coming from foreign universities co-operating with the University of Lodz.

    The knowledge acquired by the students focuses on rational decision-making in various activities on internal and international level. Students possess high level of expertise in making advanced technological projects and databases and implementing them in administration and enterprises. They are also able to perform the formulation of the technological progress in those entities.

    Graduates of first and second-level studies.
    Additional pre-condition is that the candidates have completed at least intermediate course on computer science, economics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics.

    MASTER'S DEGREE IN DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS (FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND SOCIOLOGY)

    Description:

    The Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of Lodz in cooperation with United Nation Information Centre in Warsaw and United Nations Development Program offers MA studies in Development Economics. The aim of the programme is to educate open-minded specialists, who are able to understand, analyse and solve different socio-economic problems in the vast area of development economics and will be able to work in similar field in various institutions. The programme includes essential knowledge in economic fundamentals and, at the same time, allows students to expand individual interests in complex issues of economic development - through numerous elective courses. The programme content is designed to meet fully with current market need of specialists in development economics. Understanding the gravity of appropriate training, the studies supplement academic knowledge with additional practise via case studies and group work. Students have various opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills effectively to many areas of their interests and to make themselves familiar with theoretical, as well as empirical part of studies in development economies. Thus, the programme attempts to educate most comprehensively on contemporary approach towards globalisation and integration, and other dimensions of complex processes of global economy.

    Graduates of the programme can find employment as policy-makers, economic analysts, researchers and other economic professionals. Generally as those who are expected to understand development processes in global economy on its various levels like the government representatives, public administration workers, highly qualified advisors, etc. They are well prepared to work in flexible, multicultural work environment where good knowledge of development is essential.

    BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MANAGEMENT - SPECIALIZATION BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT)

    Description:

    This is a complete programme of the first level studies offered at the Faculty of Management. The programme enables students to acquire extensive knowledge in the field of management as well as managerial qualifications and skills useful for undertaking a business activity.

    The programme includes one specialization – “Business Management”. Its aim is to create high-potential managers capable of working effectively in global business regardless of the situation, business location or culture. Students learn and train how to manage not only functional business areas but, above all, learn understanding and managing processes in a global company.

    The Faculty offers a wonderful atmosphere for studying and many possibilities of self-improvement.

    The studies are organised in a form of modules. Each of the courses offered is assigned to one of the modules: • Modules A, B and C include courses outlined in the teaching standards prepared by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

    • Modules D and E include courses outlined in the teaching standards prepared by the Faculty of Management for, respectively, studies in the field of “Management” and the “Business Management” specialisation.

    • Modules F, G and H, include supplementary courses. The students may choose between different modules during the course of their studies.

    Candidates profile:

    The study programme prepares graduates to perform as medium- and high-level managers in both, Polish and foreign enterprises. The candidates should be open-minded and active. A good command of English is also one of the requirements.

    Duration and fees:

    The standard recruitment procedure of the University of Lodz applies to the candidates who wish to undertake the programme. Annual costs of the programme are 3.000 PLN for Polish nationals and 2.500 EUR for foreigners. The EU nationals are subject to the same procedure which applies to Polish nationals.

    MASTER'S DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETING SPECIALISATION - EUROMARKETING (CHAIR OF INTERNATIONAL MARKETING AND RETAILING, FACULTY OF INTERNATIONAL AND POLITICAL STUDIES)

    Description:

    The Chair of International Marketing and Retailing is the only one at the University of Łódź to provide a unique teaching programme based on the combination of management and marketing issues with European studies. The Chair was also the first in Poland to conduct research on place marketing and place branding long before the subject began to be of utmost importance to academia and various organizations The programme offered within a two year Euromarketing specialisation is designed to cover the most up-to-date challenges faced by all kinds of organizations, both public and private. Owing to our involvement in cooperation with a number of institutions (see below) we are able to find innovative ways of approaching interdisciplinary subjects the way this is done in practice.

    The courses offered are conducted in small and middle-sized groups and apart from lecturing involve such teaching techniques as case studies, workshops and group project perparation. A considerable number of courses is offered in English. Our team consists of specialist and practicioners in the areas of modern management and European integration. Our students are granted individual contact with the lecturers, each of whom is capable of tutoring foreign students of a specific language profile.

    POST-GRADUATE STUDIES - THE EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAMME IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT)

    Description:

    The Executive MBA Program is a two-year intensive program in business management, offered through a partnership between the PAM Centre - Faculty of Management of the University of Lodz, the R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, the Towson University and University of Baltimore. Our partner institutions are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). It is an original American program, taught exclusively in English, primarily by American faculty.

    Total number of hours taught: about 640 regular clock hours (850 classroom hours), which is 51 credits according to American standards.

    The courses are offered on Fridays and Saturdays in the following session schedule: Friday (4:30 - 8.30 pm) and Saturday (8:00 am-4:30 pm).

    Graduates receive: original American joint MBA Diploma from Towson University and University of Baltimore, Certificate for the Executive MBA Program from the R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland and Post-Graduate Studies Diploma for the Executive MBA Program from the University of Łódź.

    Candidates profile and formal requirements to apply

    Applicants for the Executive MBA program must have:

    • Masters Degree (Bachelors Degree for American students),
    • Fluency in English,
    • at least 2 years of professional experience.

    Application procedure:

    To apply, an applicant must complete:
    • English language proficiency test (TOEFL level),
    • Psychological MAPP test (Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential),
    • Interview.
    Also submission of final grade from Masters Studies diploma is taken into consideration.

    Application Fee is 600 PLN.
    Loans on favourable conditions are available through an agreement with mBank.

    Joint European Master’s Degree In Women’s And Gender Studies (Gemma) Erasmus Mundus Programme (Faculty Of International And Political Studies)

    Description:

    The Joint European Master in Women's and Gender Studies is addressed to students interested in women’s studies, gender studies and equal opportunities policies. The programme provides an possibility to acquire professional qualifications and to benefit from mobility as students are expected to study at different European universities. This inter-university and interdisciplinary postgraduate programme gives a unique opportunity to obtain a double diploma from the home and partner institution acknowledged by all Consortium members. The two-year programme starts in September 2007 and will accept students from both third countries (from outside the European Union) and from the EU.

    Major fields of research: The research subjects conducted by the Institute of Polish Philology cover such issues as: the history of the Polish language, dialectology, onomastics, studies of contemporary Polish language, and the history of Polish literature of all periods. Other research topics concern the methodology of teaching Polish as a native and foreign language.

    The Institute of English Studies conducts research in English and American history of literature, linguistics, including the methods of teaching English as a foreign language, the theory and practice of translation and contrastive Polish - English grammar. Studies conducted by the Germanic Studies Department focus on linguistics, German and Austrian literature and Polish-German relations in literature. Research in Classical Philology concerns: philosophy, Greek and Roman literature, and also Indo-European linguistics.

    At the Institute of Romance Studies studies centre around: linguistics, history of French literature, and computer assisted phraseological studies.

    Research subjects in Russian Philology cover the following areas: history of Russian and Soviet literature, linguistics, teaching Russian as a foreign language. Research in the field of Library Science deals with the history of books and libraries and with press studies. There is also a Unit for the Directory of the Polish Book Professions. Research at the Institute of Slavonic Philology concentrates mainly on the language and literature of the Balkan Slavs.

    Cultural Studies encompass such subjects as: theory of literature, history and theory of drama, film and television.

    Major fields of research: The Faculty conducts research in areas of five disciplines of sciences: archeology, ethnology, philosophy, history, and history of art. In the field of archeology the studies concern ancient and medieval settlement in Eastern Pomerania, the Stone and Bronze Ages, medieval, defence and residential buildings, cloisters and urban compexes in Poland.

    Research subjects in the field of ethnology cover such areas as: socio-cultural changes in 20th century Polish communities, theoretical and enthnological issues of culture studies, folk art. In the field of philosophy, studies concern: the history of European and Polish philosophy, philosophy of science, esthetics, ethics, formal logic, and theory of art.

    In history, research is focused mainly on the social and economic history of Poland from the 10th to the 20th century, the history of Byzantium, the history of international relations from the 17th to the 20th century, history of the military in the Middle Ages and in the 20th century, history of cities and industry, history of historiography.

    History of art deals with such research subjects as: the history of European painting, the history of art of national minorities in Poland, the history of architecture.

The research, which is both of a theoretical and practical character, concerns the regularities and perturbances in this process, its optimization, prevention, rehabilitation, and psychotherapy.

    School of Polish for Foreign Students



    The School offers a variety of short and long-term course ranging from one to nine months. Classes vary in level of advancement, and encompass both language and special purpose courses, as well as such subjects areas as Polish literature and culture.

    Fields of research: Researching scientific terminology in different fields of science. Choice of vocabulary for teaching Polish as a foreign language. Grammatical syllabus for teaching Polish as a foreign language. Psycho-linguistic aspects of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Video materials for teaching Polish as a foreign language.

    Tuition fees for preparatory courses of Polish language for foreigners in the School of Polish for Foreign Students are:

    1) 1 month course of Polish (ca 120 hours) in August (fee: 450 EUR + 30 EUR registration fee) - apply before the 1st of July
    2) 5 month course of Polish (ca 500 hours) beginning in March (and October) - fee: 1650 EUR + 30 EUR registration fee - apply before the 1st of February (for October course before September)
    3) 9 month preparatory course (ca 800-900 hours) beginning in October for applicants pursuing university studies in Poland (an applicant may choose one specialization - humanities, medical sciences, technical sciences, economy or agriculture for specialized course of Polish) - fee: 3000 EUR
    4) 9 month preparatory course (ca 800-900 hours) beginning in October for applicants pursuing postgraduate and doctor studies (the permission of the Polish Ministry of Education is required) - fee: 3000 EUR All programs include afternoon activities : lectures (contemporary Poland, literature and culture), sight-seeing tours, excursions and theatre and museum visits.
    Students who complete our preparatory courses are accepted at all Polish universities. The experience has shown that our students are able to complete their studies in Polish successfully.

    About the University

    Short history of University of Łódź

    The University of Łódź was founded on 24th May 1945 as a continuator of achievements and traditions of educational institutions functioning in Łódź in the interwar period: The Teachers' Training Institute (1921-1928), The Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (1924-1928) and a branch of the Polish Free University (1928-1939). Professor Teodor Vieweger, the Rector of The Polish Free University was an initiator of establishing a university in Łódź under its original name: "The State University - The Free University." The first rectors of The University of Łódź were outstanding representatives of the Polish science: Tadeusz Kotarbiński (philosopher, logician, praxieologist), Józef Chałasiński (sociologist), Jan Szczepański (sociologist, philosopher).

    Today the University of Łódź is one of the biggest Polish universities and it has 11 faculties, 29 fields of study and 118 specializations. UŁ educates over 42 000 students under didactic supervision of 2271 academic teachers.

    The University of Łódź offers 5- and 4.5-year Master’s courses, 3- and 3.5-year professional courses and 2- and 2.5-year supplementary Master’s courses in all systems of education. The University also runs post-diploma and doctoral courses in such fields as: the Humanities, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Law, Economics and Earth Sciences.

    International Cooperation has been given the utmost priority in the development policy of the University. Under the direct cooperation agreements the UŁ collaborates with 92 higher education institutions in 30 countries. Faculty members of The University of Łódź take part in many international research programmes including: SOCRATES, TEMPUS, INCO-COPERNICUS, ACE, Jean Monnet, CEEPUS.     The Library of the University of Łódź was one of the first scientific libraries to be opened in postwar Poland and it was founded by the Organizational Committee of the University of Łódź.

    The Library of the University of Lódz is the largest scientific library of a public character in Łódź. It fulfils three main functions: building up the collection, processing and working on collection items, and providing services to the public. The Library also conducts research and didactic studies. The main part of the book collection is situated in Library store-rooms. The remaining books and journals are placed in the reference sections: the Main Reading Room and Study Rooms. Apart from the Main University Library there are 106 branch libraries and their collections are adjusted to the different scientific and didactic activities of the institutions. Together with these subsidiary libraries, the collections at the Library of the Łódź University amount to about two and half million volumes and the number of registered library card holders is now over 20.000. Access to the collection is much easier due to broad computerization of data.
