General Presentation The Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy from the University of Oradea was established in 1991, after a long and profound analysis realized by a commission of famous specialists, commission composed from: Acad. Ph.D. univ. prof. Stefan Milcu, Acad. Ph.D. univ. prof. Nicolae Cajal, Acad. Ph.D. univ. prof. Gheorghe Niculescu, Acad. Ph.D. univ. prof. Pius Brânzeu and Acad. Ph.D. univ. prof. Mircea Ifrim as founder and initiator of this university project. The Medicine and Pharmacy Faculty functions as an institution with its own headquarters situated downtown in an impressive building in no. 10, 1 December Square. This building offers adequate spaces for study, providing 5 lecture halls, 18 laboratories, an own library with reference departments, 580 places for preclinical practice and all the facilities offered by modern endowment and furnishings. In this building, the Medicine specialization performs its activity. The Stomatology Specialization has its headquarters in a completely renewed and modern building in no. 2 Ion Creanga Square, where there are optimal conditions for students' study and practice, here existing specialized equipment: complete dental units, dental radiology laboratories, a sterilization station, demonstration rooms, halls for Periodontics, Ortodentistry, halls for Dental Techniques, a specialized library, a special place arranged for Implantology as well as a lecture hall with 90 seats endowed with ultra-modern audio-video equipment. Beginning with the academic year 2002 - 2003 a new department for General Medicine and Stomatology specialization will be organized in French as the teaching language. The Pharmacy Specialization was founded in the 1992 - 1993 academic year, having now its own headquarters on no. 2 Castanilor Street. The departments of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Botany, Toxicology, Physical Chemistry of the Environment, all of them have the necessary endowments within the existing eight modern laboratories. Nowadays the aim is the setting up of other laboratories and the establishing of a place for micro-production. The Physiokinetotherapy was established in 1993, having as model the similar colleges from U.S.A, preparing, during a 5 years study period, specialist physiokinetotherapists. The reason for such a Specialization resides in the large number of thermal water treatment and recovery units existing in the Bihor county, units situated in Oradea and in the spas: Baile Felix, 1 Mai and Stâna de Vale, where there is an exceptional material basis and specialized medical staff as well. The analytical program of this Specialization is in total accordance with the international requirements, assuring a professional training with international recognition. Short history The traditions of higher education in Oradea, metaphorically speaking, go back to time immemorial. This year there are 222 years since the inauguration of higher education in Oradea and 39 years of continuous higher education in Oradea. In the illuminist atmosphere at the end of the 18th century, "a higher institution for philosophic teaching" was founded in Oradea in 1780, which was to become in 1788 the Faculty of Law, the oldest faculty not only within the Romanian borders but also in a vast region of Eastern Europe. After 1921, all the courses at the Law Faculty were taught in Romanian. In 1923, the foundation of two theological academies gave new dimensions to the academic life in Oradea. The Law Academy of Oradea, together with the two theological academies, was to make another step forward by integrating a faculty of letters, thus achieving the old desideratum of creating in Oradea a University of Crisana. But in 1934, under unfavourable circumstances and after 150 years of longstanding activity, the Law Faculty - the academic nucleus of Oradea - is transferred to Cluj. After a thirty-year break in the activity of the Law Academy of Oradea, on the 1st of October 1963, an order of the Ministry of Education established in Oradea a 3-year Pedagogic Institute meant to do away with the scarcity of teachers in secondary education. The new institution of higher education began its activity with two faculties: Philology and Mathematics-Physics, and a year later other two faculties (History-Geography and Physical Education) were added. One by one, the new sections obtained an academic statue until 1983, when due to a poor educational policy, the didactic and humanistic specializations diminished their activity, and from a prosperous institution of higher education, Oradea turned into an engineering college affiliated to the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. In May 1990 a decree of the Romanian government established the Technical University of Oradea, later called the University of Oradea, based on impressive traditions of academic life in the town. It was an act of scientific and cultural restoration long expected in the life of the Romanian society, a major gain of the people's Revolution of December 1989. This is how the dream of several generations of scholars came true, clearly expressed by a historian of Oradea: "As regarding the future, the desire of all well-meant Romanians is to establish in Oradea a complete university, the lights of which will shine across the entire western border of Romania". Today, the University of Oradea is an integrated institution of higher education of this kind, comprising 15 faculties and 5 colleges with more than 30,000 students enrolled in short-term and long-term education, day courses, evening courses, reduced frequency courses or other forms of attendance. We all have to admit that there is no other financial or real estate investment more profitable for students. Education itself will always be the best long-term investment, as nothing is as precious as the knowledge gained during academic instruction. Main activities The mission of the University of Oradea is to train and educate on a large scale both the students and also the high education graduates, as well as to approaches certain domain of science and technology at high level. The structure of the University contains academic education, postgraduate education, colleges and scientific research. The University has the right to grant the titles of graduate, licensee, master, doctor, honorary professor, visiting professor and associate professor. The University of Oradea expanded itself by developing new faculties, colleges and research teams, as well as by developing certain specializations inside the existing faculties. Inside the University of Oradea the education and research activity is developing in the area of natural and physical sciences, as well as in the area of social and human sciences, covering (according with the UNESCO classification) the following: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Sciences of Life, Agricultural Sciences, Medical Sciences, Technological and Engineering Sciences, Economical Sciences, Geography, History, Juridical Sciences and Law, Linguistics, Pedagogy, Political Sciences, Psychology, Letters and Arts, Sociology, Philosophy. The educational process is based on the curricula for long term studies, short term studies, postgraduate's studies, master, doctoral studies and programs of continuous education and Distance Open Education. To create flexible education structures, according with the necessities and adapted to the labour market conditions, inside the University of Oradea was established a Department for Distance Open Education (Distance Learning Education). This form of training offers a great flexibility, liberating the students from the strains of time, space and rhythm of work, representing a special attraction for the working population. The University of Oradea adopted the European System of Transferable Credits, facilitating in this way the didactical process. The scientific research activity is developing in research teams inside faculties and chairs, as well as in research centers without juridical personality from our University, such as the Medical Center of Research and the National Center of Geothermal Research, which will be accredited as excellence research center, as soon as possible. The research has both fundamental character and applicative, based on the following principal domains the exploitation of the geothermal potential, researches in microwave area, researches in the area of high frequency current, researches in the area of human physiology, specific researches for the existing chairs. Presently, in the University of Oradea, inside the research teams there are 146 employees, 80 having higher education, and 7 are scientific researchers.
