     Description of secondary school system

Secondary education is provided by the following types of schools: 1.Gymnasium: Provides general secondary education and prepares for further study at universities and other higher education institutions. 2.Specialized secondary school: Prepares students mainly for vocational education and for study at higher education institutions. 3.Conservatories: Conservatories are a special type of professional schools providing courses in such branches as singing, music, dancing or dramatic arts. 4.Secondary vocational school: Prepares students for occupations requiring vocational education of a higher level and a school leaving certificate. Students may continue their study at higher education institutions. 5.Apprentice Training Centres: Prepare school-leavers for professional activities.

 Higher Education System

     Structure of system
All higher education institutions have the same legal standing and social function. They provide not only higher education, but also research and artistic activities. Higher education institutions have the exclusive right to award academic degrees. On the basis of the Higher Education Act of No.172/1990, they provide education at three levels. The first level leads to the Bachelor degree; the second level, the complete higher education: degrees granted are Mgr., Ing., MUDr., MVDr.; and the third level which leads to the Doctorate /PhD.

 Stages and Organization of Higher Education Studies

     University level studies
 

     Stage 1:     Bachelor studies

Description: The majority of higher education institutions offer three levels of study. According to the Higher Education Act No.172/1990, higher education institutions may also provide the integrated part (as concerns the content) of a three- or four-year study programme. After completion, graduates are granted certificates and awarded the degree of "Bachelor".

     Stage 2:     Magister, Engineer, Doctor of General Medicine, Doctor of  Veterinary Medicine.

Description: Complete university study lasts 4 to 6 years and consists in research. Graduates are granted the degrees of Engineer, Magister, in medical branches, the degree of MUDr. and, in veterinary branches, the degree of MVDr. Graduates of the fields of study in which the academic degree of "Magister" is awarded, may take examina rigorosa, which also includes the defence of a dissertation. Upon successfully completing it, students are awarded the following academic degrees: a) in natural sciences, the degree of "Doctor of Science" (abbr. "RNDr.") b) in pharmacy, the degree of "Doctor of Pharmacy" (abbr. "PharmDr." ), c) in the humanities and arts, the degree of " Doctor of Philosophy " (abbr. "PhDr." ), d) in law and security courses, the degree of "Doctor of Law " (abbr. "JUDr." ), e) in teacher training and sports, the degree of "Doctor of Pedagogy " (abbr. "PaedDr." ), f) in theology, the degree of "Doctor of Theology " (abbr. "ThDr." ).

     Stage 3:     Doctoral studies

Description: Doctoral studies last 3 to 4 years. Admission requirements are the completion of complete university studies (second stage).
Graduation comes after successful defence of a doctoral thesis granting the scientific degree of PhD. In accordance with the proposed principles, the PhD corresponds to the present CSc degree or the Dr degree.

     Stage 4:     Doctor of the sciences

Description: The degree granted - DrSc. is awarded to outstanding scientific and research workers on the basis of the defence  of their
thesis and for their scientific and research work.
 

     Teacher education
 

     Training of primary/basic school teachers

Faculties of education train teachers for the 1st and 2nd stages of primary schools. Training for the profession of teacher for the first
stage of primary school is provided in the form of a 4-year course. Training for the profession of teacher for the second stage of primary
school is provided in the form of a 5-year course combining two subjects.

     Training of secondary school teachers

Secondary school teachers of specific subjects are trained for their profession at various university faculties according to their fields of
study. The course lasts 5 years and leads to a state final examination. It is offered by: Faculties of Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences,
Physical Education and Sport, and Faculties of Education. Graduates of Technical Universities, of Universities of Economics and the University of Agriculture, who wish to teach the subjects of their field of study at secondary school level can follow pedagogical training.
 

     Non-formal studies
 
     Distance higher education

Since 1991, the City University in Bratislava provides distance education using English programmes in cooperation with the UK Open University. In 1994, several higher education institutions in the SR were involved in the regional project PHARE - Pilot Project for Regional Cooperation in Distance Education.

     Lifelong higher education

In 1992, the Slovak Government ratified "the Principles of Lifelong Education" which created, at the general level, preconditions for the
further development of a subsystem of lifelong education. In 1995, the draft law on further education which defines the role of the state, state
administration and self-government in adult education-lifelong education was approved.

     Other forms of non-formal education

A University of the Third Age has been established at Comenius University, Slovak University of Agriculture and the University of
Zilina. Study is provided in the form of half-day courses lasting four or more semesters. Applicants who have completed secondary education are admitted without an entrance examination. The University of the Third Age is an institution for the education of older people in harmony with the conception of lifelong education in the Slovak Republic and linked to the gerontology programme of UNESCO.

For capacity reasons, a numerus clausus has been introduced in those branches of study which cannot admit all applicants who meet the conditions. The number of students admitted is the decision of the dean.
 

     Admission for foreign students
 
     Special admission requirements for foreign students at national level:

     Definition of a "foreign" student:A foreign student is any foreign citizen who follows courses at a Slovak higher education institution. The green identity card entitles the holder to permanent residence in the SR. The holder has all the rights and duties of the Slovak citizen except the right to vote and the duty of military service. Such a foreigner is no longer considered as a foreign student.

 Recognition of studies and qualifications
 

     System of "recognition" or "accreditation" of studies completed and credentials awarded within the country:

     Description:

The Accreditation Commission is the advisory body of the Slovak Government and consists of prominent experts from higher education,
scientific and other institutions. Its main purpose is to advise on establishing, amalgamating, dividing or abolishing higher education
institutions and faculties. On the basis of recommendations of the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education, it may grant or
withdraw the right of a higher education institution or faculty to organize state and postgraduate examinations, habilitation and procedures
for the nomination of professors within individual disciplines.

The Centre for Equivalence of Documents on Education provides recommendations for nostrification of diplomas and assists in cooperation with foreign partner centres in the solution of challenged issues.

The recognition of documents on education is in the jurisdiction of individual higher education institutions. Difficult issues are solved by
