About the courses


English Language Courses

Full-time English Language Study
This course is designed for students who require a high level of English to prepare them for future careers or studies. Our highly qualified and experienced tutors will provide students with expert language tuition according to their individual needs. Students can also take additional classes in subjects such as IT and Business and can participate in our rich and varied cultural programme.

Students have the opportunity to gain internationally recognised ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualifications and have the opportunity to take other examinations such as IELTS.

Students have the full support of carefully structured classes. In addition they are expected to undertake a considerable amount of independent study in the form of set homework, class projects, library work and assignments. Students are expected to keep a record of all their independent study in their files, and these will be checked regularly by their tutors.

The course is taught with emphasis both on General English; to improve grammatical and spoken fluency and accuracy in everyday situations, and English for Academic Purposes. Student’s competency in academic reading and writing is increased. They also learn to acquire good note-taking skills, develop evaluative reading skills and learn how to extract and summarise relevant information.

This course provides an excellent preparation for higher study in English-speaking universities. We currently offer this course full-time over one year, or full-time over six months. This course is also recommended for students who wish to progress to BCE University Foundation Programmes.

Summer and Short Courses

Intensive English

These courses are designed for those who would like to improve their English as quickly as possible. Supported by expert tutors and working in small, lively groups, students have the opportunity to rapidly improve their English language abilities through listening, speaking, reading and writing. These courses will benefit those students who intend to join one of our Foundation courses but who need to improve their English level first. Students can decide on the length of their studies according to their own requirements. We also provide a variety of exciting social and cultural activities to suit all tastes. We are confident that whatever your particular preferences, there will be something of interest to you.

Intensive English with IELTS Preparation.

This course is similar to the Intensive English course but includes coaching and tuition specific to the requirements of the IELTS exam. The IELTS exam (International English Language Testing System) is taken by all students whose first language is not English and who want to study in an English speaking country. It tests how well students can understand and use the kind of English they will need to be able to study in English. Before progressing to a degree in a UK University, students must have achieved the necessary level of English; usually a minimum test score of 6.5 is required.

Candidates need to take four tests; these are, listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each test focuses on a separate skill. BCE arranges for testing through recognised external IELTS examination centres. Entry Requirements

Students should have a minimum level of IELTS 3.5

Undergraduate Foundation Course

Full-time
Business, IT, Science and Art and Design
This course has been designed for those who have graduated from Senior High School with an IELTS equivalent of 4.5. The purpose of this course is to enable students whose first language is not English to develop the skills and understanding necessary to successfully undertake a degree programme at a UK university.

The course includes

  • English language tuition to Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Higher Level
  • English for Academic Purposes up to IELTS 6.5
  • Study skills
  • IT skills
We also provide tuition in other subjects related to the student’s future degree course, which can include:
  • Science subjects
  • Mathematics
  • Art and Design
  • Business Studies
  • Marketing
  • Computer Science

In addition to our academic courses, we offer assistance with the university application process and arrange for students to visit and experience a selection of universities Postgraduate Foundation Course

Full-time
This course has been designed for those students who have a qualification equivalent to a Higher Diploma with professional qualifications and work experience, or graduates whose background and English level may not be at the required level for direct entry into postgraduate degree courses.

The entry English language requirement is equivalent to IELTS 5.0. The course content includes:
  • English language tuition to Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Higher Level
  • English for Academic Purposes to IELTS 6.5 or above
  • Information Technology
  • Quantitative Research Methods
We will also provide specialised subjects that are related to the student’s future research or masters programmes including:
  • Science subjects
  • Business Studies (including Accounting)
  • Marketing
  • Computer Science
Following the postgraduate Foundation Course, successful students can progress to Masters or PhD courses. We would advise students who intend to apply for Postgraduate Studies to seek guidance before starting the Postgraduate Foundation course so that we can assist you to fulfil the specific entry requirements for your future studies.
