The Postgraduate Programme in Computing

The Postgraduate Programme in Computing offers a range of courses aimed at producing highly skilled graduates for the IT industry. All of our courses are highly rated by employers – we have among the highest rates of graduate employment in the UK. According to government statistics, 97% of our graduates are employed in IT within 6 months of graduation.

The programme offers two types of course – generalist courses, aimed at graduates of non-computing disciplines who wish to work in IT; and specialist courses, aimed at graduates who already have degrees in computing but who wish to gain advanced skills.

The courses available are:

Generalist courses:

MSc Computing: Software Technology

The course provides an opportunity for graduates of non-computing disciplines to develop specialist skills suitable for a career in Computing. The course is designed for students who wish to apply their knowledge and expertise in a technical environment and need to develop core computing skills in order to achieve this. Students will develop skills in software development, database systems and web programming as well as the research and development skills required to undertake a sustained software development project. The Software Project Engineering and MSc Project modules are of particular value to employers as evidence of the ability to produce high quality work of an advanced technical standard to deadline and to a high standard of presentation.

MSc Computing: Software Technology with Network Management

This course is a development from MSc Computing: Software Technology which includes a practically-focused Network Management theme, reflecting the strong demand from industry for graduates with hands-on skills in this area. The networking modules are taught by CISCO-accredited trainers in a purpose-built networking lab. The module content covers Semesters 1 to 4 of CISCO's Training Academy and will fully prepare students for CISCO accreditation

MSc Information Systems

The course is a master's programme that combines the study of software development with distributed systems. The main aim of the course is to provide an education and training in software development tools and techniques that will extend and enhance the knowledge and skills of non-computing graduates and prepare them for a career in the general area of information systems. MSc Information Systems graduates can also add information systems knowledge to their existing expertise and continue to be employed in the field of their original degree.

The Software Project Engineering and MSc Project modules are of particular value to employers as evidence of the ability to produce high quality work of an advanced technical standard to deadline and to a high standard of presentation.

Specialist Courses:

MSc Computing: Information Engineering

The MSc/PgD/PgC Computing: Information Engineering is a specialist masters programme, designed to equip honours Computing graduates with expert knowledge of information systems technology and to provide a foundation of research skills to become an independent researcher. It provides the technical skills and research training necessary to develop sophisticated information systems and to meet the challenge required in merging the various technologies.

The technical content of the course is aimed at relevant industrial techniques and theoretical underpinning in the specialised area. In addition, the technical work is supplemented by a significant amount of research training to provide students with an introduction to the skills required to become independent researchers. The MSc project modules are of particular value to employers as evidence of the student's ability to produce high-quality work of an advance technical standard to deadline and to a high standard of presentation.

At all stages of study, the course content is complemented by practical work intended to reinforce the learning process but also to enhance the vocational relevance of the programme of study. The syllabus content also incorporates course units intended to enhance the technical and professional skills required to manage and execute state of the art information systems.

MSc Computing: Information Engineering with Network Management

This course is a development from MSc Computing: information engineering that includes a practically-focussed Network Management theme, reflecting the strong demand from industry for graduates with hands-on skills in this area. The networking modules are taught by CISCO-accredited trainers in a purpose-built networking lab. The module content covers Semesters 1 to 4 of CISCO's Training Academy and will fully prepare students for CISCO accreditation.

MSc Human Interface Design

The course is a specialist master's programme, which aims to develop expertise in both the technical and the design skills, required for effective computer interfaces.

The modules aim to provide specialist advanced technical skills in the areas of human computer interaction, interface design and graphic design. The course content is complemented by practical work intended to reinforce the learning process but also to enhance the vocational relevance of the programme of study.

The syllabus content also incorporates course units intended to enhance the technical and professional skills required to manage and execute state-of-the art information systems.
