School of Town and Regional Planning

The School was established in the 1960s as a centre for teaching and professional development in town and regional planning. It has built on these early ambitions and was recently awarded the highest rating for teaching quality of the Scottish planning schools. It has diversified into the related fields of environmental management at the undergraduate level and European Urban Conservation at the postgraduate level. All the teaching programmes are accredited by the respective appropriate professional bodies - the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI); the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). The School is also involved in distance learning courses in planning (RTPI) and local and regional economic development (Institute of Economic Development).

The School has a thriving research environment with a supportive infrastructure and has 10 full-time members of academic staff who are associate members of one or more of the School's research centres. Research activity is focused within the School's research centres - the Centre for Planning Research, the Joint Centre for Scottish Housing Research and the Centre for Conservation and Urban Studies.

The Research Centres have an established research record in contract research funded by public agencies and in academic research funded by the research councils. Current academic research is supported by grants from the ESRC, Rounder, Nuffield Foundation and the Carnegie Trust. Recent research contracts include the European Commission, the Housing Corporation, Scottish Executive, Scottish Homes, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations and Scottish Local Authorities and Health Boards.

Postgraduate study in the School is linked directly to the work of the Centres. Applications are particularly encouraged in academic areas related to the research priorities of the Centres (see below).

There are two routes to postgraduate qualification - MPhil or PhD by research, or MSc/Diploma by taught course in European Urban Conservation. While full-time study is encouraged, the School welcomes part-time study linked to experience in professional practice.

Potential postgraduate students should have a first or upper second-class honours degree in a discipline relevant to the proposed field of research. Applicants with relevant professional experience will also be considered. The School welcomes enquiries from potential students who wish to discuss their proposed area of study and/or entry requirements before making formal application for admission.
