Fees Overseas fees 2007/8 £8,700.

Home fees the full-time tuition fees for 2006/7 are £3,725.

The part-time tuition fees for 2006/7 are £22.75 per credit and you would normally take 60 credits in year 1, and 120 credits in year 2, giving you a total cost of £4,095. Fees normally increase slightly each academic year. Fees for 2007/8 have not been set yet.
Student grants/
Financial Assistance
ESF (European Social Fund) will not be available for 2007/8. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) will provide a bursary for 3 full-time Computer Games Technology students every year. The bursary is currently £4,000 (maintenance grant only). Awards will be granted on previous academic performance. Home students only can be considered.
Admission requirements For all programmes, except Computing & Information Systems and Web Computing, applicants should normally have one of the following qualifications:
• Degree in Computing or Computing-related subject, including subjects with a significant core of computing, or
• Degree equivalent professional qualifications, or
• DipHE or HND plus a minimum of 3 years professional experience in Computing.
Students with non-standard entry qualifications are also encouraged to apply

For the Computing & Information Systems and Web Computing programmes, Applicants should normally have one of the following qualifications:
• Degree, not necessarily in Computing, or
• Degree equivalent professional qualifications, or
• DipHE or HND plus a minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience.

Students with non-standard entry qualifications are also encouraged to apply.

All International students are required to have equivalent level to that associated with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 220

The MSc Programmes

The range of MSc in courses at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, is varied and up-to-date, covering all the relevant aspects in Computing, Information Systems, and Information & Communications Technology. Theoretical and practical aspects in various aspects of computing are included in the syllabuses, making our suite of MSc courses very flexible and ideally suited for those aspiring a career in any aspect of Computing, Information Systems and Management, e-Business, Web Development and many others.

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences runs eight Masters Degree courses which deal with advanced topics in the field of computing. These eight courses have been designed to meet the needs of graduates working in, or aspiring to enter, a computing environment who wish to update and further their skills and knowledge in order to gain additional qualifications to enhance their career development and progression.

The eight MSc programmes available currently are:

*Digital Entertainment Systems;
*Ubiquitous and Mobile Computing.

All our courses are reviewed and updated on a regular basis, ensuring that our students study a very up-to-date, relevant syllabus, with direct practical significance for their careers. This is reflected in the range of programmes, as 5 of the 8 programmes are only a few years old, and in the constant development of new modules for each programme. For instance, a new module that has been developed recently is the Forensic Computing module, reflecting an area of growing interest worldwide. Moreover, due to the high number of advanced researchers in our School, students are guaranteed to be taught by real experts in the various fields of study.

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences

The School employs over 40 highly qualified academic staff and is supported by teams of skilled technical and administrative staff. As well as access to University-wide IT facilities, staff and students are provided with up-to-date specialist computing facilities within the School. As a student at Liverpool John Moores you will have access to a range of academic, social and welfare resources as well as to a host of activities in the city of Liverpool itself which can offer top-class theatres, bands, football teams, art galleries and night clubs. The School is proud of its growing research base and reputation and long-standing history of working with local, regional and national industries through student placement, research, consultancy, short course activity and Teaching Company schemes. The School also has a number of collaborative partnerships both locally and internationally.

At advanced level, the School has a number of research groups:

Distributed Multimedia Systems and Security, Applied Artificial Intelligence, Information Systems, Neural Computation and Statistic, and Mathematics Education. The largest group is the Distributed Multimedia Systems and Security , which focuses on a variety of areas, all centred around multimedia, networking and security. Major ongoing and recently completed projects have considered ad-hoc and peer to peer networks, networked appliances, ubiquitous computing, mobile computing and wireless sensor networks. All of these rapidly developing technologies are likely to have a major impact on future networking, especially within the home where we are likely to see major developments occurring over the next decade. We also have projects relating to distributed intrusion detection, secure component composition, digital rights management and computer forensics.

The group benefits from two dedicated research labs focusing on Networked Appliances and Network Information Security. Both providing state-of-the-art facilities, the labs support a number of projects including internationally recognised research into the deployment of unstructured services, dynamic service composition and peer-to-peer gateway technologies, routing protocols for ad-hoc networks, dynamic Bluetooth routing to replace network infrastructure during emergency situations, Bluetooth WLAN bridging and denial of service and intrusion detection and prevention systems.

Distributed multimedia applications, services and security pose challenging design and implementation problems requiring imaginative and exciting solutions, and which the group is committed to pursuing. Commercial interest in the area is growing very rapidly due to its huge market potential; a fact reflected in the successful partnerships fostered by the group and the annual PGNet and ACSF conferences that attract speakers from both academia and industry.

The other groups are equally active and highly regarded in the research community. Together, they ensure that the School has a vibrant and diverse environment where advanced learning is strongly supported and encouraged.

Liverpool John Moores University

Teaching and learning

• LJMU has reached an international standard for research in general engineering with increasing prominence in electrical/electronic, aeronautical, mechanical and manufacturing engineering

• LJMU is also the UK’s lead university for HEFCE-funding in emerging research disciplines: art and design, nursing, social work, and communication, media and cultural studies

• By 2008, around 85 per cent of our academic staff will be actively pursuing research, both for its own sake and to provide the necessary intellectual infrastructure for high quality teaching and knowledge transfer

• External research funding, from sources such as our industrial partners, the Wellcome Foundation and research councils, including the BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC, PPARC and NERC, has increased by 86 per cent since 2000-01.

Enterprise activities

• The University currently supports around 10 start up and spin out companies every year and these companies enjoy four times the survival rate and employ twice as many employees as the national average for new start-ups.

• Invention disclosures and patents are also on the increase, with over 70 registered in 2005.

• Thanks to our ESF-funded Student Enterprise Project, we are helping talented students develop their entrepreneurial potential and put their business ideas into practice. Ten student companies have already been launched, with a further 300 students on enterprise programmes.

• Student expertise is also central to the Business Bridge venture, which in 10 years has arranged around 9000 placements in over 2000 SMEs, worth an estimated £1.5 million in student earnings.

Queen’s Anniversary Prize

• LJMU is the designer, manufacturer and operator of the World’s largest robotic astronomical telescope (85 feet tall, 25 tons, and with a 2m diameter precision mirror) (Guinness Book of Records)

• LJMU received a prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize in recognition of our astronomical excellence and for developing the world’s largest and most sophisticated ground-based robotic telescopes. These are now opening up new areas of research for professional astronomers.

• The prize also relates to our creative application of this technology not only as part of LJMU’s innovative undergraduate programmes and distance learning courses, but because we are using it to reveal the wonders of science to school children around the UK through our National Schools’ Observatory.

Campus developments and facilities

Over the next 10 years, the University will invest around £100 million in campus developments creating learning environments spanning all disciplines that stimulate creativity, entrepreneurialism and innovation.
