About the School

THE SCHOOL
Marymount is an independent college-preparatory boarding and day school for girls in Grades 6 to 12. The parents of our students are professionals in the field of business, education, medicine and the diplomatic service. The school was established in 1955 by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary to offer the daughters of American families living and working abroad continuity in their education. Today about 45 different nationalities are represented within the student body. Most students are fluent in more than one language, and the international environment of the school provides them with the unique opportunity to become acquainted with cultures other than their own.

ACCREDITATION
The school is accredited by the European Council of International Schools, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the Independent Schools Joint Council and is a member of the Girls' Schools Association. It is authorised to participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and the Middle Years programs.

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS
For graduation, a total of at least 18 units is necessary, including 4 units in English and 3 each in Social Studies, Foreign Language, Mathematics and Science. Religious Studies and Physical Education are required each year in attendance at Marymount (1/2 unit is earned for each per year).

SPECIAL CURRICULUM FEATURES
Students in Grades 6-10 follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. This programme supplements the curriculum by linking the various subject are through a network of "Areas of Interaction" such as Approaches to Learning (study skills), Social Service, The Environment, Health and Social education, and Homo Faber (Creativity/Technology). The International Baccalaureate programme is offered in Grades 11 and 12 and this two-year programme provides a challenging course of studies. To earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a candidate is required to pass examinations in six subjects, three at the Higher Level (approximately equivalent to Advanced Placement) and three Standard Level. These must include two languages, one subject relating to Individuals and Societies (Social Studies), one laboratory science, mathematics and a sixth subject which may be art, information technology, music, religion, theatre arts or another in the first four categories mentioned. In addition, Diploma candidates must follow a course in the Theory of Knowledge, submit an extended essay (normally related to one of the examination subjects) and participate in the Creativity, Action and Service Programme.

Year on year, all our students enter excellent Universities!
