    About the Courses

    Taught Courses
MSc students must complete the taught phase consisting of eight modules and an individual project dissertation in a relevant topic. Postgraduate Diploma students are required to undertake the taught phase without the project. Postgraduate Certificate students need complete only four modules (including the core modules).

The course in Defence Simulation and Modelling covers the main principles underpinning synthetic environments, including the underlying models, the hardware and the software and considers their application in a defence context. The course in Military Operational Research covers the principles of operational research and the methods and techniques applicable to industrial and military systems which lead to better decision making. The course in Scientific Computation covers the development of high quality software and the computational solution of problems from science and engineering using numerical methods.

The Group also runs about 25 specialist short courses each year in operational research, scientific computing, numerical methods and statistics. These courses cater for people from both civilian and military backgrounds and some can be tailored to meet specific needs.

    Research Degrees
Opportunities for research, leading to the degrees of MSc, MPhil and PhD are available to students with interests in one of the following areas: Mathematical Modelling and Applied Mathematics;Scientific Computation; Operational Analysis/Research; Statistics; Intelligent & Decision Support Systems.

    About the University

Cranfield University is one of the largest centres for post-graduate teaching and research in the UK. Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the UK at Shrivenham provides a unique partnership between Cranfield and the MoD.

The Applied Mathematics and Operational Research Group, within the Engineering Systems Department of Cranfield University, at the Defence Academy of the UK, has 12 academic members of staff with responsibilities for a wide range of teaching and research. In addition to the suite of modular Postgraduate courses, the Group offers courses on numerical and software aspects of scientific work to graduates from industry, commerce and public services and operational research courses aimed at the operational analysis community in the defence sector. The Group has an active research programme including full-time funded research students and research contracts with both MoD and non-defence industry. It currently has strong research interests in applied and numerical mathematics, in statistics and in operational analysis, particularly in combat modelling. Mathematical and computational modelling are vital tools in all industry sectors. The Group applies these methods to real problems in science, engineering and management.
