The University has a wide range of health-related activity. It conducts courses and research for healthcare professionals including nurses, optometrists, radiographers, and speech and language therapists. City also offers courses and research in areas such as health economics, medical informatics health management and food policy that apply other disciplines to a healthcare context. Each professional area is taught in a separate specialist school or department. You will be studying in a close-knit community of students and staff all specialising in your chosen subject. Activities are united through the two Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Allied Health Sciences, both under the umbrella of the Institute of Health Sciences. One of the major benefits of studying a health-science course at City is being in London. London is a centre of excellence for healthcare, and the University has strong links with the major teaching hospitals, professional bodies and specialist institutions. London's large and diverse population also provides the opportunity to experience rare clinical cases and to review the needs of multicultural communities. City is a leading provider of education and training in health-related subjects in the south-east of England. It is recognised as offering many distinctive and specialised activities and offers a stimulating environment in which to study for entry to the healthcare professions. The University has a long tradition of health-related teaching and research dating back more than 90 years to the establishment of a Department of Technical Optics, today the Department of Optometry and Visual Science. More recently the University has seen considerable growth in its health-related activity, particularly in the area of postgraduate study. This means that you will study at a University that is well known as a major centre for the education of healthcare professionals. The University enjoys a good reputation for its health-science activity and has excellent links with the professions and with employers. Innovative research and postgraduate teaching influence undergraduate courses, in particular the range of final-year options available and the opportunities for projects. The use of the latest technology and of modern information systems forms an important part of the education of all our students in the health sciences. The teaching of nursing at City's St. Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery was rated the best in London and the third best in the UK by the 1999 Guardian University Guide. The quality of teaching in subjects allied to medicine at City (Optometry & Visual Science, Radiography, and Speech & Language Therapy) was recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency which awarded it 23 out of 24 in the 1999 Subject Review. |
