Course/Program description

As a student of Russian you will be assigned to a member of staff who will act as you personal tutor throughout the four years of the undergraduate programme. The honours programmes in Russian aim primarily to make you familiar with three areas of modern Russian studies: the contemporary Russian language, Russian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and Russian history and thought since Peter the Great, with particular emphasis on the period from 1800 to the collapse of the Soviet Union and its consequences.

The language part of the programme includes both written and oral work and is designed to give the student a firm grammatical basis together with considerable emphasis on the contemporary idiom. Regular use is made of Russian Satellite TV broadcasts and films from the Department's extensive video library. For Russian literature you will read the great works of the last two centuries; individual authors are studied in some depth, but the module also aims to present them as part of a broader picture showing the development of the most important literary ideas and movements The aim of the civilisation modules is to acquaint the student with Russia's history and culture as well as to complement the study of Russian literature. .

About theUniversity

Russian has been taught at Exeter since 1960 and has six members of staff two full-time and four part-time, including two native speakers of Russian. They cover between them a wide range of interests embracing many linguistic, literary, historical and cultural aspects of Russia. All members of staff give students individual attention and create a working atmosphere which is academically sound, intellectually stimulating as well as being informal and relaxed.

All students are assigned to a member of staff who acts as their personal/academic tutor throughout the four years of the undergraduate programme.
