InterComm Pre-sessional Programme An acceptance on a postgraduate programme (a conditional offer may be acceptable in some circumstances). General English Programme The General English Programme began in April 2007. It includes English for everyday communication and develops awareness of British life and culture. Students on this course will gain skills and knowledge in the following areas: English Language • listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for everyday communication • vocabulary expansion • grammatical accuracy • creative expression • pronunciation and spelling IT Skills • computer-based language learning • researching on the internet An Awareness of British Culture • familiarity with social and cultural life in Britain Please note that acceptance on this programme does not necessarily mean that you will be accepted on an academic programme at the University of Leeds. Pathway Pre-Sessional Programme The Pathway Pre-sessional programme provides English language and academic preparation for the International Foundation Year and undergraduate studies. Students on this programme will develop the following skills and knowledge: English Language • listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for everyday communication • vocabulary expansion • grammatical accuracy • creative expression • pronunciation and spelling Academic Skills • academic writing skills • sentence and paragraph structure • essay-writing techniques • report-writing techniques • researching and writing assignments on relevant topics • referencing and avoiding plagiarism • academic reading strategies • understanding lectures • participating in seminars and discussions • giving oral presentations Exam Preparation • IELTS preparation IT Skills • researching on the internet • PowerPoint presentations An Awareness of British Culture • familiarity with social and cultural life in Britain • analysing the British media - press, TV and radio An Awareness of University Systems, Services and Facilities • familiarity with university facilities • using the library and library catalogues • using the computer clusters and on-line resources InterComm Pre-sessional Programme The Intercomm Pre-Sessional is the only programme of its kind in the UK. It provides English language preparation and an introduction to current affairs for postgraduate degrees in Communications Studies and Journalism; Politics, Developmental Studies and related fields; Translation and Interpreting Studies and related fields. It provides English language and academic preparation for post graduate business and management programmes – MBA/MA/MSc.
