    Department of Applied Mathematics and Economical Cybernetics

    Department of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics was founded in 1972. Dean of the Department is Professor Yusif Mammadov, Doctor of Physical-mathematical science.

    Department's faculty includes: 1 Member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, 1 Associate Member of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, 14 Doctors of Sciences, 36 Candidates of Sciences.

    There are 668 students at the Department: 617 students on bachelor degree program and 51 master degree students, postgraduate students. The Department prepares specialists in fields of applied mathematics, physical-mathematical equations, mathematical economics and optimisation of management systems.

    Department of Chemistry

    The Department of Chemistry was founded in 1934 on the basis of the Chair of General Chemistry. Y. Mamedaliyev, A. Guliyev, M. Nagiyev, J. Zulfugarlih, P. Rustamov, S. Huseynov, J. Huseynov and others played significant role in organisation and development of educational process at the Department. Well-known graduates of Department are I. Orujova., A. Guliyev, R. Rizayev, P. Rustamov and others. Dean of the Department is associate professor Eldar Ahmadov.

    580 students on bachelor degree program and 35 students on master degree program study at the Department.

    Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty of 26 Doctors of Sciences, 70 Candidates of Sciences. Among them are 23 professors, 42 associate professors, 19 senior lecturers and 2 lecturers.

    Department of Geology

    The Chair of Geology was created in 1943 in the Department of Geology and Geography. It has been functioning as an independent department since 1991. Dean of the Department is associate professor Adil Khasayev.

    Such famous scientists, academicians and professors as M.A.Gashgay, Sh.G. Mehdiyev, M.M.Aliyev, A.Sh. Shikhalibeyli, F.M. Bagirzadeh and A.J. Sultanov worked at the Department.

    428 students study at the Department of Geology: 365 students on bachelor degree program and 20 students on master's degree program and 10 postgraduate students.

    Teaching and research are carried out by the faculty of 12 professors, 15 associate professors, 6 senior lecturers and 3 lecturers.

    Department of Geography consists of 4 chairs:

    Scientific interests:

    Azerbaijan magmatic and ore formations, protection and rational utilisation of Azerbaijan underground waters, mineralogy and geochemistry of Azerbaijan ore deposits, stratigraphy and study of fauna of Mesozoic and Cainozoic eras. Cosmic tectonical map of Azerbaijan and map of mineral resources deposits of Azerbaijan were compiled at the Department.

    Department of Biology

    The Department of Biology acts from 1934. Dean of the Department is well-known specialist in the field of mycology Professor Ibrahimov A.Sh., Doctor of biology.

    The well-known graduates of the Department Members of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences A.I. Garayev, S.M. Asadov, J.A. Aliyev, Associate Members of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences Y.A. Abdurrahmanov, G.M. Sultanov and others played significant role in organisation and development of educational process at the Department.

    Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty of 83 men among them are 19 Doctors of Sciences, professors; 55 Candidates of sciences, associate professors; 6 senior lecturers and lecturers. Besides them, there are 9 research workers, 45 senior laboratory assistants, 30 laboratory assistants. 745 students on bachelor degree program, 61 students on master's degree program and 5 postgraduate students study at the Department.

    Department of History

    The Department of History established in October of 1919 Baku State University is of the same age. The Department of History was as History-Philology Department, and became the independent in 1934. The Dean of the Department is Professor Yagub Mikail oglu Mahmudov, the Honored Scientist of Republic, a doctor of historical sciences.

    The follow persons - N.A.Dubrovski, V.V.Bartold, I.I.Mashaninov, N.Y.Marr, S.F.Oldenburg, P.K.Ghuze, A.N.Samoylovich, A.E.Krimski, V.Gordlevski, A.Gubaudillin, M.Gubaydullina, B.Chobanzade, I.Jafarzade, D.Mammadzade, T.A.Shahbazi, P.P.Fridolin, M.Gasimov, V.Khuluflu, I.A.Huseynov, A.S.Sumbatzade, A.A.Alizade, Z.I.Ibrahimov, A.N.Guliyev, A.M.Shahmaliyev, M.Erivanski - taught in the Department in the various time. They played the great role in formation of the Department and in national human resources training. Number of renowned representatives of Azerbaijan's science and culture, public figures graduated from the Department of History . The world famous statesman, the President of Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Alirza oglu Aliyev was alumnus of the Department of History.

    There are 184 lectors and education-assistants at the Department: 28 of them are the doctors of sciences - professors, 3- doctors - associate professors, 59 - candidates of sciences- associate professors, 25 - candidates, 23 - senior lecturers and lecturers, and rest of them are education-assistants.

    The Department of Philology was founded in 1919. The Department played significant role in development of science and culture in Azerbaijan, preparing high-qualified specialists. Dean of the Department is Professor Nizamy Jafarov, Doctor of Philology.

    The Department of Theology was founded in 1992/1993 academic year and admitted 50 Azerbaijanian and 10 Turkish students. Dean of the Department is Doctor of Sciences in the field of philology, Member of Academy of Iraq Republic, Member of Syria Islamic Science and Arabian Philology and Member of Islamic Law Academy of Islamic Conference Organisation, Professor Mammadaliyev Vasim Mammadaly oglu.

    201 students study at the Department of Theology. Graduates of the Department obtain speciality of "Theologist and teacher of Arabic".

    Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty of 21 men, among them are 6 Doctors of Sciences, professors; 2 Candidates of Sciences, associate professors; 2 Candidates of Sciences, senior lecturers; 3 senior lecturers and 10 lecturers.

    Department of Geology and Geography was founded in 1944. From 1991 Department of Geography has begun its independent activity. N. Aliyev, G. Gulun, A. Hajizadeh, M. Aliyev played key role in organisation and development of geographical science at the University.

    Dean of the Department is Professor Museyib Museyibov.

    Department of International Law and International Relations

    The Department of International Law and International Relations was founded in 1991. The main purpose of the Department formation is training high-qualified specialists in international law and diplomacy for our independent republic. Dean of the Department is associate professor Sadiyar Zeynalov. Teaching and research activities at the department are carried out by the faculty of 58 men who provide high-level teaching.

    There are 1048 students at the Department: 886 students on bachelor degree program and 162 students on master's degree program. 138 foreign students study on bachelor degree program.

    Department of Journalism

    The basis of the Department was founded in1928. In 1945 the Chair of Journalism was opened at the Department of Philology. Head of the Chair was H. Shahgaldiyev. In 1969 the Chair was transformed to the independent Department of Journalism. The first Dean of the Department was professor Nuraddin Babayev. At present Dean of the Department is Yalchin Alizadeh.

    Famous Azerbaijan journalist-scientists professors Sh. Huseynov, F. Mehtiyev, G. Khalilov, J. Abdurahmanova, T. Rustamov, S. Aliyev; associate professors A. Nabili, N. Bagirov, N. Zeynalov played significant role in organisation and development of educational process at the Department.

    Graduates of the Department take an active part in public and political life of the Republic, hold leading positions in state institutions and guide newspapers, journals and publishing houses. Most of them are distinguished by their own publicistic style. Siruz Tebrizli, Minister of Press and Information; Rafael Mamedov, Vice-Minister; Namig Abbasov, Minister of National Security; I. Ismailov, Member of Milli Mejlis; Mahal Ismailoglu, editor of "Khalg gazeti" newspaper; Maila Muradkhanova, Gulu Magerramli, officers of TV and Radio Broadcasting State Company; Mirshakhin Agayev, senior editor of "ANS" broadcasting company acquit themselves well on their positions.

    Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty of 23 men. 300 students and 45 master degree students study at the intramural and extramural divisions of the Azerbaijan sector of the Department. Citizens of foreign countries are among the students studying at the Department.

    The international relations of the Department have become more extended for the last years. We establish close relations with The Embassy of France in Azerbaijan. In the frame of this co-operation distinguished French journalists conduct meetings, lectures and seminars for teachers and students. Two projects were implemented at the Department under the auspices of UNESCO.

    Department of Law

    Chair of Law began its activity at the Department of Oriental Studies in 1927-1928 academic year. Chair of Law became independent Department of Law at the end of 1928. Department of Law played significant role in economic, social, political and cultural life of Azerbaijan. Dean of the Department is associate professor Namig Aliyev.

    Famous Azerbaijan pedagogues-scientists lawyers V.P. Gahramanov, G.J. Jafarov, M.S. Khalafov, I.P. Mammadov, A.I. Asadov, G.I. Manayev, M.B. Rasulov, T.N. Gafarov and others played key role in development of the Department.

    Graduates of the Department work in the President Office, Milly Majlis, Cabinet of Ministers, various ministries and organisations. We could proudly mention the names of M.N.     Department of Mechanics and Mathematics

    The Department of Physics and Mathematics was founded as one of the first department at the University in 1920. From 1958 Department of Mechanics and Mathematics has begun its independent activity. Dean of the Department is Professor Gambar Namazov.

    All the times the well-known scientists had worked at the department. We can set as an example Bukhshtab L.A., Lopatinsky Y.B., Kovanko A.S., Yelkin L.I., Rozenfeld B.A., Tartakovsky V.A., Khidirzadeh M.I., Efendiyev M.R., Khalilov Z.I., Huseynov A.I., Ibrahimov I.I., Javadov M.A., Rasulov M.L., Amanzadeh Y.A, Ahmadov G.T., Habibzadeh A. Sh., Babayev A.A. They had played significant role in Department development, strengthening scientific capacity, formation and training skilled specialists.

    Department of Social Sciences and Psychology

    In 1990 new training courses on sociology, history-psychology, history-social psychology and history-ethnic psychology were opened in the Department of History. Department of Social Sciences and Psychology was founded on the basis of these courses in 1991. Dean of the Department is docent Fazil Vahidov.

    Members of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences H. Huseynov, A. Makovelski, Professors M. Gasimov and A. Aslanov played significant role in organisation and development of educational process at the Department. Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty 121 men, among them are 12 Doctors of Science, professors; 1 Doctor of Science, docent; 61 Candidates of Science, docents; 21 Candidates of Science, senior lecturers; 5 Candidates of Science, lecturers; 10 senior lecturers; 11 lecturers and 26 technical assistants.

    Department of Library Studies

    Chair of Library Studies was founded at the Department of Philology in 1947-1948 academic year. In 1962 the Chair was transformed to the Department of Library Studies. The first Dean of the Department was deserved figure of culture of Azerbaijan Republic professor Abuzar Khalafov, who had been working in this position for 25 years. Associate professor Khalil Ismailov has been the Dean of Department since 1994. Well-known graduates of the Department are professor A.A. Khalafov, professor Z.H. Aliyev, professor B.V. Allahverdiyev, associate professor H. I. Ismailov, associate professor T.F. Guliyeva, L. Gafurova, Zalimkhan Yagub.

    Teaching and research activities are carried out by the faculty of 31 men, among them are 2 Doctors of Sciences, Professors; 1 Candidate of Sciences, Professor; 11 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors; 1 Candidate of Sciences, senior lecturer; 12 senior lecturers; 3 lecturers and 15 laboratory and technical assistants.

    480 students study in the Department. 9 of them continue their studies on master's degree level.

    Scientific Research Institute of Applied Mathematics

    The Scientific Research Institute of Applied Mathematics at Baki State University was founded in 1992. F.A. Aliyev, Doctor of Physics - mathematical sciences, is the Head of the Institute.

    4 doctors of sciences and 12 candidates of sciences work at the departments of scientific research Institute. Scientific - research departments at the Institute are as followings:

    · Discerning of forms and processing of the information
    · Mathematical problems of system analysis
    · Mathematical simulating and automated systems
    · Nonlinear equations and inverse problems (the problems of inverse)
    · Information - computing systems
    · Mathematical simulating of economic systems

    The scientific - research works at the Institute are being carried in the spheres of nonlinear physical processes, researching of mathematical models of managerial and economic systems and the development of algorithms solving. Researches at the Institute are being carried out as in the following directions:

    · The scientific researches, being carried out in the sphere of problems of managerial systems synthesis and optimum decisions are based on the methods of solving problems of linear quadratics optimum management, in complete and incomplete information conditions.
    · The algorithms of solving optimum management to the way out of inverse problems of linear quadratic differential games and the digital methods of optimum management of problems with unknown limits, appearing in the theory of elasticity.
    · Mathematical simulating of nonlinear processes and determination of equation with the ways of digital-analytical evolution in nonlinear inhomogeneous polyphones medium.
    · Creation of models in the spheres of gravity and surface of level with the help of methods of immovable centres, researching the problems of flowing fluids into the intensification of elastic - plastic level.

    The results of above mentioned scientific- research works were published in some influential scientific periodicals of different countries of the world - ''Applied mechanics'' (Kiev), ''The theory and systems of management'', (Moscow),'' The problems of information management'' (Moscow), '' Electronic simulating'' (Kiev), '' Automatic control'' (USA).
