About the Master's degree in High Integrity Systems

The Master's degree in High Integrity Systems opens the door to a wide range of fields of use in safety critical areas in:
    • automotive and machine building industries,
    • chemical and pharmaceutical industries,
    • aeronautics and space systems,
    • bio-medicine and medical technology.

Further fields of use include business process critical areas in:
    • banking and finance,
    • insurance business,
    • media and television,
    • IT-Services.

Core competences in Software-Engineering, System Modelling, Advanced Testing and Data Integrity put you ahead of the crowd in applying for a doctorate degree or one of the most interesting jobs out in the field!

The first year, consisting mainly of lectures and exercise groups, will lay the foundation for more advanced work in the second year.

First term
• Safety Critical Computer Systems
• Human Machine Interface Design
• IT-Security
• Implementation of DBMS
• Distributed Systems
• Introductory Data Analysis

Second term
• Pattern oriented Software Architecture
• Advanced Testing Methods
• Standards and Certification
• System Theory Modelling
• Transaction Management
• Data Mining Methods

Professors and teaching staff members all have many years of industrial and teaching experience and know the job requirements in high tech industries and what students can cope with.

The second year will focus on project work and the Master's thesis. There will be fewer courses and more independent studies. Students will have specialized in one of the core subjects and will be ready to tackle one of many demanding intellectual challenges.

Third term
• Agile Methods
• Formal Methods and Cleanroom Software Engineering
• Simulation Methods
• Multivariate Data Analysis

Fourth term
In the fourth and final term work will be on the Master's Thesis. This may be
• applied research work at a company or institution that may already promise a good job perspective,
• applied research work at the IPIAG-Research Institute at Fachhochschule Frankfurt or
• theoretical work qualifying the laureate for a PhD-program.

About the Department

Fachbereich 2 Informatik und Ingenieurwissenschaften/Department 2 Computer Science and Engineering incorporates different fields of engineering. These are Electrical, Mechanical, Precision, and Chemical/Process Engineering. Another specialty of the department is the area of Computer Science. Within all these fields the department offers 15 different study programmes (undergraduate and Master courses):

Biological Processing (Bachelor)
Computer Engineering (Bachelor)
Computer Science (Bachelor)
Business Information Systems (Bachelor)
Electrical Engineering (Bachelor)
Electrical Energy and Automation Technology (Diploma)
Information and Commutations Technology (Diploma)
Material and Product Design (Bachelor)
Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor)
Mechatronic and Microsystems (Bachelor)

Assisted Living Systems (Master)
High Integrity Systems (Master)
Information Technology (Master)
Production Management and Automation (Master).

There are more than 3.200 students registered for these programmes – one third of them overseas students. The teaching staff consists of 80 full time professors, 45 laboratory engineers and more than 150 part time teaching associates from companies and other cooperation partners. Some of the courses are mutual projects with other universities of applied sciences in the neighbourhood of Frankfurt, sharing their respective expertise to improve programmes.

Next to the theoretical foundations in the different fields, the main emphasis of the programmes is laid on qualifying students for the respective job markets. Thus, they spend a certain amount of their studies working in small groups in the 40 departmental laboratories. In their last year, students spend about five months working as interns in a company or factory, preparing their Bachelor or Diploma Thesis. These internships are accompanied by special on campus seminars to establish a feed back between professors and students, in order to link practical experiences to theoretical knowledge. Throughout their studies students also have access to more than 300 personal computers, be it for seminars, projects, or their own studies, e.g. preparing a thesis.

As seen in the list above, the study programmes in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have almost all been restructured into Bachelor and Master Courses and have been remodelled into modules according to the criteria of the Bologna Process. Because of the new structure with modules to be shared by different programmes, especially during the first year of studies, students gain a multidisciplinary approach to their fields.

Along with these changes, all of the courses now include obligatory English classes as well as they offer seminars and exercises in English. The Master programme High Integrity Systems is taught in English only. Another characteristic of the different courses in Computer Science and Engineering are modules imparting skills in business management and team working, enabling students to adapt to their future workplace environment.

The department also maintains four institutes for research which offer students the opportunity to participate in ongoing research programmes. The institutes are:

Institute for Interdisciplinary Technology (IIT)
Institute for Materials Science (IfM)
Institute for Computer Science in Applications (IPIAG)
Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBME).

The implementation of a evaluation systems, both on the level of course and the department on the whole, as well as the participation in a quality management programme carried through by the University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt guarantees a continuous assessment and improvement of programmes and student services.
