The Department of International Relations was established in 1993 on the basis of the Faculty of History. It has two specialities "International Relations" and "Regional Studies (Area Studies)". Every year 50 applicants are enrolled in full-time tuition and 25 in distant education.
To get a bachelor's degree in Regional Studies students study for 4 years, and in the specialities of "International Relations" and "Regional Studies" for 5 years, further tuition of specialists is organised for those who want to get Master's/ candidate's/doctor's Degree. There is an Academic council on defence of candidate's/doctor's dissertations in the specific subjects of the Department.
The subjects of specialities are as follows:
International Relations, the History of Diplomacy, International and Regional Law, the History of European Integration and Institutes of European Union, World's Economy, tile History of International Blocs and Organisations, Russia and countries of the CIS, the Countries of Central Europe, USA, North America, the Countries of Mediterranean Europe, tile Countries of tile Middle and tile Far East. English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Modern Hebrew, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese are taught at the Department.
The Department participates in the European program TEMPUS (T-JEP- 10004-95), that is under the supervision of the University of Florence (Prof. E. Di Nolfo) and Universities of Southampton and Augsburg, in Civic Education Project and others.
According to the decision of tile European Union from 29 November 96 a Centre of Documentation and Information of European Union is opened at the Department and there is also the Centre of Technical Teaching Aids, Internet Centre, The Fund of Sources and Literature in International Relations.
