Croatia was an independent kingdom in the early Middle ages and in 1393 became part of Hungary.

From 1918 until 1941, it was a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. When Germany and Italy occupied Yugoslavia on 10 April 1941 the independence of NDH was proclaimed and leader became Poglavnik Ante Pavelic. From 7 July 1941 Croatia got Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Dalmatian coast from Crikvenica to Cavtat, all territories south of the river Drava, west up to Varazdin and in September 1943 Sibenik was taken from Italy.

After 1945 Croatia was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia and from 26 June 1991 declared its independence. Yugoslav stamps become invalid from 16 January 1992.
