MACEDONIA


Brief Historical Overview Relating to Postal History


The land of Macedonia was part of the Ottoman Empire and after the Balkan Wars 1912-1913 become part of Serbia. From 1918 it bacame part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

In April 1941 Bulgaria occupied Yugoslavia and Macedonia and the cities of Bela Palanka, Leskovac, Gnjilane, Pirot, Skopje, Prilep, Bitola and Ohrid where included in Bulgaria. At that time Bulgarian stamps were used. From 8 September 1944 until 13 November 1944, Germany occupied Macedonia. The Germans used Bulgarian stamps overprinted with new values.

In 1945 Macedonia became a constituent republic of Yugoslavia.

By referendum on 8 September 1991, Macedonia declared its independence.

The first stamps, Obligatory Tax, were issued on 30 December 1991 and were in use up until the end of March 1993.
