The School of Public Policy at the University of Birmingham offers a range of postgraduate courses - focusing both on particular aspects of public policy and on general public management. The School's flagship programme in public management is the Public Service MBA, accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). The programme is designed to equip its participants for contemporary public management, building competence and confidence for effective leadership in public and voluntary sector/NGO contexts. Participants in the Public Service MBA programme acquire both the knowledge and the skills for public management. They derive particular benefit from working alongside colleagues from other organisational contexts. Together participants explore the potential of different change management strategies for improving public provision and for building better public governance: sharper accountability, and enhanced citizen participation and trust in public decision-making. Participants may register for the Public Service MBA either on a part-time basis (normally over two years) or full-time (one year). A distance learning option is also available and takes 2 ½ - 4 years. The programme is delivered through two main streams: • The International stream: particularly designed for those in public management and governance roles in developing countries, e.g. India, Pakistan, China, and Latin American and African states. This stream is delivered at Birmingham on a full-time basis or as a distance learning package. • The Public and Voluntary Sector stream: particularly designed for those whose interests centre on public management in advanced economies: the UK and other countries of Europe, North America, Japan and Australasia. This stream is delivered at Birmingham on either a full-time or a part-time basis (with modules organised into short intensive units of two and three consecutive days, arranged at roughly three/four week intervals). The University of Birmingham is a top class research-led, Russell Group University and a member of the international grouping Universitas 21 - an ideal place to pursue your postgraduate studies. The University of Birmingham’s School of Public Policy is one of the largest and internationally most respected academic centres for the study of public policy and management. For over forty years, our work has provided specialist expertise across the spectrum of public governance and service provision, especially in urban and regional studies, local government, international development and heath care. Delivered through four departments, our School can offer not only first class postgraduate dedicated study facilities but also strong links with practitioner communities in over 40 countries through our applied research, consultancy and continuing professional development work. Its four departments are: • Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (CURS): dedicated to research and teaching in housing, regional and local economic development, urban policy and regional and urban regeneration. • Health Services Management Centre (HSMC): specialises in development, education and research in health and social care services. HSMC’s prime purpose is to strengthen the management and leadership of these services and to promote improved health and well-being. • Institute of Local Government Studies (INLOGOV): dedicated to the applied study of local and community governance. Its clients include policy-makers and managers from across the public and non-profit sectors. • International development Department (IDD): committed to supporting the development of effective governance systems in transitional and developing countries, with particular focus on local and urban governance. With over 100 committed academic staff with expertise in subjects ranging from aid management to service delivery supported by a team of dedicated administrative staff we can guarantee a first class postgraduate experience. |
