MSc/Pg Diploma Geotechnics –in partnership with Industry This MSc course runs in partnership with commercial companies and therefore is closely aligned with industry’s needs. Partners include major consultancies, specialist geotechnical contractors, as well as an international site investigation specialist. Acting as a geotechnical specialisation degree for civil and environmental engineering graduates, the course is also a conversion degree for earth sciences, physics and mathematics graduates who want to develop skills for a career in geotechnical engineering. One innovative feature is the integration of modern techniques for analysis, such as numerical modeling using PLAXIS, within the syllabus. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Forensics – in collaboration with the Centre for Forensic Science, Dept of Pure & Applied Chemistry This unique MSc, the first of its kind in the UK, harnesses Strathclyde’s world-leading expertise in environmental forensics. The course is the result of a close collaboration between the Department of Civil Engineering and the Centre for Forensic Science at Strathclyde, the UK’s most respected Forensics Science research and education centre. According to the International Society of Environmental Forensics: “Environmental Forensics has grown out of the need for a platform to present scientific investigations that address environmental contamination subjected to law, public debate, or formal argumentation, as well as the evaluation of the basic science that serves as underpinnings to those activities”. This MSc addresses these needs. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Entrepreneurship – in collaboration with the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship Organisations worldwide are now looking to develop technologies and products that address climate change, promote sustainability and improve environmental quality. This innovative MSc, the first of its kind in Europe, has been designed to respond to the urgent need for a new generation of environmental entrepreneurs. The MSc aims to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical understanding of environmental entrepreneurship, in preparation for a career in either self-employment or in an innovative organisation. Through this MSc students will learn how to identify, assess and shape environmental ideas into real business opportunities. The MSc runs in close collaboration with the prestigious Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde. Some of the modules are taught between 18:30 and 20:30 to facilitate attendance by part-time students. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Science – offered jointly between the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow This MSc has a particularly strong scientific underpinning. It combines the joint expertise of three departments from two universities, Civil Engineering and Pure & Applied Chemistry from Strathclyde, and Chemistry from Glasgow. Moreover, the course is done in collaboration with the most important environmental public sector organisation in Scotland (the Scottish Environment Protection Agency – SEPA). This ensures wide access to practitioners’ knowledge and understanding of the scientific processes, procedures and policies involved in the day-to-day management of the environment. In effect, this MSc is the only truly cross-disciplinary, science-based postgraduate course of its kind in Scotland. The course is offered jointly by the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow and the awards are made in the name of both universities. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Engineering This MSc has been designed to meet the needs of Scotland’s and Europe’s urban regeneration, environmental protection, and infrastructure investment portfolios. A distinctive feature of this course is that it is highly topical. Glasgow succeeded in winning the bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and therefore there will be an extensive urban regeneration programme. This includes building on land that has been contaminated in the past. Therefore students on this course will have challenging ‘real world’ issues to study ‘on the door step’ of the University. The real-world input ensures that the curriculum is relevant to industry’s needs and assists with graduate employment. MSc/Pg Diploma in Science, Technology & Sustainability This highly innovative course bridges the gap between: environmental policy; development studies; and science and technology policy. With a strong international appeal, this course has been designed to respond to the urgent need to find better ways to harness science and technology in support of sustainability in both developed and developing countries. The course examines the role of public policy in the application, development and management of science and technology to enhance social wellbeing, economic growth and environmental sustainability. It addresses questions such as how innovations occur in principle and in practice, and how they can best be managed. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Studies There is a need for an appropriately trained, highly skilled and environmentally aware workforce to respond to the challenge of sustainable development. Meeting this need requires an interdisciplinary education. Running since 1992, this popular MSc offers an innovative cross-disciplinary approach to the study of environmental management, policy, and sustainable development. The course is one of the most flexible in the UK, offering a very wide range of subject options, chosen from across the University’s five faculties: Science, Business, Education, Law, Arts & Social Sciences, and Engineering. The course, which is also available as open access, is offered to graduates from all disciplinary backgrounds and/or employment situations. MSc/Pg Diploma in Environmental Health Environmental Health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. It encompasses environmental protection, food safety and hygiene, occupational health and safety, and the built environment. This MSc, the only one of its kind in Scotland, is accredited by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) and was developed in response to the shortage of Environmental Health Officers identified by REHIS. MRes courses MRes courses are largely research and project-based but there are also taught elements. Students have access to laboratory facilities providing hands-on experience essential for understanding and designing projects for sustainable development. All MRes courses appeal to graduating students from many diverse backgrounds such as civil and environmental engineering, environmental science, geography, chemistry, and biological sciences. MRes in Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control This course aims to provide advanced study in Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) within the European Community Directive framework. There is a definite niche in the marketplace for this MRes, particularly now that bigger companies are employing environmental managers to deal with issues such as the ISO9001, ISO14001 and new PPC legislation. MRes in Geo-Environmental Engineering This course is designed to respond to the engineering community’s concerns at the lack of the multidisciplinary skills that are necessary for the successful completion of geo-environmental engineering projects. A unique set of laboratory facilities provides hands-on experience of chemical, biological and geotechnical tests. MRes in Sustainable Construction & Infrastructure With the ever-increasing need to become more 'environmentally friendly', governments are urging companies to incorporate sustainability at the design process. This course aims to provide advanced study in sustainable development from the perspective of the engineering profession through a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to the design and development of engineering projects. and the David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability Civil Engineering at Strathclyde University has been one of the first departments in the UK to fully embrace the importance of the environment in today’s world. This has made it a strong and forward-looking department and the ideal choice for graduate students who are interested in doing a post-graduate degree that is highly marketable. A unique feature of the department is our strong link to industry and public bodies, which is an essential part of our approach to research and education. It also provides our students with valuable contacts outside the world of academia. The department is the main provider of graduates in Civil Engineering and Environmental Health in Scotland. In particular, the Department leads the Joint Research Institute in Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation formed in 2007 under the Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering (GRPE). The GRPE - which includes the Universities of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian and Paisley - was funded to promote multi-disciplinary collaboration between leading research groups in the West of Scotland and provide world-class joint research facilities (see www.grpeng.ac.uk). The success rate of graduates from our department is excellent, with most finding permanent course-related employment within six months of completing their degree. There is currently SAAS quota funding and other studentships available for some of the courses. The Department is the main sponsor of the David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability (DLCS) – see www.strath.ac.uk/dlcs – which aims to promote cross-disciplinary programmes in teaching and research, for the whole University, in the areas of environment and sustainability. The activities in the Centre are based on the recognition that the 'sustainability' agenda, which seeks to address the needs of the present without compromising that of the future, is primarily people-focused. As such, the Centre's programmes are designed to link technological and engineering solutions to socio-economic and environmental pressures arising from climate change, population growth, and unsustainable production and consumption behaviours at local and global levels. This is in keeping with the wider objective of the Centre to provide a strategic framework for effectively embedding the concept and practice of sustainability in engineering University Research and Education. The Centre's teaching and research programmes aim to enhance the longstanding international reputation of the University as 'a place of useful learning'. Its diverse expertise profile provides a robust basis for it to evolve as a centre of excellence in sustainability studies. The Centre's management and organisational structure is designed with the aim to facilitate implementation of its role as a bridge across Faculties in the University and also between the University, industry and government and non-government agencies. Since receiving its Royal Charter in 1964, Strathclyde has become the third largest university in Scotland. It has 67 buildings over 500 acres of land. It teaches over 20,000 students in five faculties: Law, Arts & Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Science and Strathclyde Business School. Taking account of distance learning, short course and continuing professional development and evening courses, Strathclyde provides courses for over 50,000 people each year, making it the UK's largest provider of postgraduate and professional education. The UK's top employers target our graduates, choosing to include Strathclyde in a very select schedule of recruitment visits. The University Careers Service does everything possible to help students make the most of their career potential. Strathclyde's location is unique.
