M.A. Programmes
The Politics of International Resources and Development -
Analyses the politics of development, the changing international political economy and key
themes underpinning recent world events. Core modules on international processes of change
and debates about development. ESRC recognized for research training and award eligibility.

Democratic Studies -
Examines the key areas of democracy and democratisation in both new and established democracies.
Core modules on democratic theory and consolidation are applied to practice in chosen case-studies.

Studies the relationship between economic change and world politics today, especially:
states and markets; globalisation, public policy and domestic politics; global finance, trade

Examines the rapidly changing structures of post-Cold War international politics and the

Africa: Human and Sustainable Development -
Inspects key debates about Africa's politics, culture, society and sustainable development.

Post-Communist Studies -
Examines the complex phenomenon of post-communism. A core module explores the interaction of
politics. economics and culture in the societies of contemporary Central Europe and the former Soviet
Union. Students may also study Russian, Czech, Mongolian or Bulgarian languages.

Ph.D by Research -
Full ESRC recognition (mode A and B) for Ph.D. Research Training Programme. The
department has particular expertise in political theory, the politics of development and
international politics and offers supervision in all the areas covered by its MA programmes.
Regional specialisms include Europe. N. America, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and
Central Asia.
