Cost / fees
Students from the European Union must not pay any tuition fee in the fee-free period (regular duration of study). Students have to pay university fees if:

  • their fee-free period (minimum length of study + two additional semesters) has expired
  • they have to pay fees because of their nationality
  • they are taking a non-degree programme (attending individual classes or a programme connected with having an overseas qualification recognized)
Students whose fee-free period has expired, or who are required to pay a fee due to their nationality or taking a non-degree programme, must pay university fees every semester.

University fees amount to EUR 363.36 per semester and EUR 726.72 per semester for third-country nationals. In addition to university fees, students also have to pay the student union fee plus insurance (EUR 22.70 per semester). This means that a total of EUR 386.06 or EUR 749.42 is due per semester.

Whilst the student union fee stays the same in extension period, the university fees increase by 10%. Students who pay during the extension period therefore have to pay a total of EUR 419.90 per semester. Fees do not increase for non-degree students or students who are required to pay a fee of EUR 746.92 during the general admission period.

Accommodation

Master’s in Information and Communications Engineering

The Master’s degree programme Information and Communications Engineering builds on and develops skills acquired in the course of a Bachelor’s degree, as Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Telematics, or Informatics. The Master’s degree is international in its orientation and is therefore taught entirely in English. In addition to offering broad fundamental knowledge, the branches of study allow students to gain in-depth qualifications for the development and use of modern information and communication technologies.

Students can choose between the following branches of study:
    • Autonomous Systems and Robotics
    • Networks & Communications
    • Business & Engineering
The branch of study Autonomous Systems and Robotics serves to provide an academic education and qualification for professional activities in the development and operation of autonomous systems, which interact with their environment through mechatronic components, as well as covering the required scientific insights and methods. The course content encompasses both sound theoretical principles and practically relevant methodology. In addition, the degree programme offers opportunities to acquire skills in areas of specialisation, for instance in the fields of autonomous robotics, driving assistance systems, self-driving vehicles, networked sensor and actuator technology, networked control technology and intelligent production systems.

Building on fundamental principles from the fields of Sensor and Actuator Technology, Robotics, and Control Systems Engineering students completing the branch of study Autonomous Systems and Robotics are well-equipped to
    • identify and understand new problems.
    • improve concepts and methods from the field of Information Technology.
    • recognize technological paradigm shifts.
Students have the opportunity to further enhance their training by selecting areas of specialization in various technical fields:
    • Autonomous Systems and Robotics (Autonomous Robotics, Automation Engineering, Intelligent Traffic and Transport Systems)
    • Networks and Communications (Sensor Networks, Digital Signal Processors, Wireless Networks)
    • Informatics (Artificial Intelligence, System Security, Human-Machine Interaction)
    • Mathematics (Stochastic Processes, Data Analysis, Optimization)
The branch of study Networks and Communications serves to provide an academic education and qualification for professional activities in the development and operation of modern information and communication technologies, which require the application of scientific insights and methods.

The course content encompasses both sound theoretical principles and practically relevant methodology. In the first instance, students are taught the principles and methodologies of mobile communications, signal processing, and wireless sensor networks. During the course of the degree programme, students can attend additional lectures, courses, and practical laboratory courses on mobile networks, pervasive computing, signal processing, measurement technology, robotics, image processing, and transportation telematics. The programme is further supplemented by a range of courses from technical informatics (e.g. system security, distributed systems), and technical mathematics (e.g. optimization, stochastics).

Upon completion of the degree programme, students are qualified to
    • improve concepts and methods from the field of information technology,
    • identify and comprehend new problem definitions in this field,
    • recognise technological paradigm shifts.
The branch of study Business & Engineering serves to provide an academic education and qualification for professional activities which require the blending of technical and economic expertise. The programme content focuses particularly on the application and implementation of scientific insights and methods, with an emphasis on integrated thinking when analysing problems and when developing solutions for challenges in the sphere of economic and business. Business engineers are furnished with the ability to establish connections between the modes of working and thinking that are specific to the different disciplines, and they are often deployed in companies or organisations which deal with technological solutions from an economic point of view. Business engineers are consequently qualified for professional activities in a very wide range of occupations.

Students acquire well-founded knowledge in the Master’s degree programme’s introductory courses covering the basics of:
    • Value Based Management
    • Operations Management and Logistics
    • Energy Economics: Theory and Policy
Furthermore, they are well-versed in the advanced courses of this branch of study, which reflect the following areas:
    • Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management
    • Operationsmanagement & Supply Chain Management
    • Organisational Control & Strategic Management
    • Sustainable Development
Students can additionally choose from a diverse range of supplementary business studies courses, such as:
    • Principles of International Law
    • Evaluation in Organisations
    • Market Research
Students completing the branch of study Business Engineering are also qualified to scientifically address the subject matter of their chosen technical complement, either in the field of “Autonomous Systems and Robotics” or in the area of “Networks and Communications”.

    University of Klagenfurt

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (AAU) is a young and innovative university at the intersection of three cultures. Since its foundation in the year 1970, it has established itself as the leading academic educational institution in the region, and as a hub for the acquisition, exchange, and transfer of knowledge across the entire Alps-Adriatic Region.

Future oriented degree programmes, outstanding achievements in teaching and research, numerous co-operations at home and abroad, ideal conditions for the advancement of young researchers and a one-of-a-kind campus nestled between a Renaissance city and Lake Wörther-see give the university its distinctive character. The global QS World University Ranking Top 50 Under 50ranks the University of Klagenfurt among the best 150 young – under the age of 50 – universities world-wide.

More than 11,600 students pursue their studies and research on the campus, including around 2,000 from 100 different nations across the globe.

Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt is located in western Klagenfurt, close to Lake Wörthersee. AAU is one of the few campus universities in Austria. AAU’s Klagenfurt campus covers a total area of around 100,254 m² and includes 51,379 m² of unspoilt green space, meaning that AAU students are able to achieve the perfect balance between study and relaxation. Since 2007, the campus has also been home to Austria’s most contemporary University Sports Institute (USI), which has an area of 1156 m² available for sporting activities. The USI offers a wide range of sports on campus, as well as a variety of sports camps all across Europe.

The AAU campus enjoys excellent transport links with Klagenfurt city centre, is accessible and very close to Lake Wörthersee. There are also a large number of restaurants and housing options in the area surrounding the campus.

The Lakeside Science & Technology Park is located right next to the AAU campus. The park enables AAU and companies to pool their expertise in modern information and communication technologies. Most departments in the Faculty of Technical Sciences are based in the Lakeside Science & Technology Park, which facilitates excellent links between the university’s research and teaching, theory and practice. This transforms the park into a hub that connects the university with industry, research with practice, and business with society.
