    Accommodation The National Sports Academy provides for students student hostels located in the university campus or not far from it, accommodating about 1500 students. A student canteen and 5 snack-bars function on location. Students have at their disposal medical services. There is an on-campus Medical Centre with dentist’s and doctor’s offices.

    Fees The fees for students from the EU and for Bulgarian students are the same. Tuition fees per academic year for foreign students:
    Preparatory language course – 3000 EURO
    Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes:

    PhD programmes:
    Full-time – 4 500 EURO
    Part-time – 1 500 EURO
    Admission requirements Foreign students who may wish to apply to pursue their studies at the NSA are invited to submit their documents in the NSA Educational Department in the period 1-20 September as follows:
    · High school diploma, translated into Bulgarian language and legalized by the respective Bulgarian Consulate;
    · medical certificate confirming the applicant enjoys good health status, translated into Bulgarian language;
    · invoice certifying tuition fee payment.

    The applicants are expected to pass one-year preparatory course in the NSA Language Training Centre. During this course the applicants study - Bulgarian language, anatomy and biology, chemistry, basic gymnastics, competitive games (basketball, volleyball, handball and football) and sport of their choice – and pass respective exams. Total number of credit hours for the specialty "Sport" is 990 and for "Physiotherapy" and "Physical Education" – 1050. The results of the exams shall be valid for the ranking of applicants for the respective specialty.

    The Faculty of Physical Education provides education for university–style specialists in the field of physical education, entitled to teach physical education at all levels of the education system.

    The Bachelor’s programme is full-time or part-time. The duration of the full-time program is 4 years (8 semesters), while that of the part-time one – 5 years (10 semesters). The curriculum encompasses obligatory general-theoretic and special courses; optional courses and obligatory teacher’s practice including 3000 academic hours or 240 credits. After passing the State theoretical exam (or defending graduation thesis) and the State practical exam, the graduates acquire qualification profile "Teacher in Physical Education”.

    The Master’s program for holders of Bachelor’s degree provides for 3 semesters of study and a defence of a graduation thesis in the field of school sports and leisure-time sports.

    Holders of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree can receive the Doctor’s degree after a 3-year full-time course of study or 4-year part-time course of study on the basis of an individual programme, leading to the defense of a Ph.D. thesis.

    The Faculty of Sports is providing education for sport specialists in the field of competitive sports and training of sportsmen – male and female - of all age groups in 51 sports disciplines and sport related activities: acrobatics, badminton, basketball, baseball, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, rowing, track and field athletics, judo, canoe-kayak, karate-do, kick-boxing, cycling, riding, bodybuilding, curling, swimming, rugby, sambo, triathlon, skiing, snowboard, sports gymnastics, sports shooting, sports dances, sumo, taekuon-do, tennis, table tennis, tourism and mountain climbing, tourism with orientation activities, fencing, football, handball, ice hockey, grass hockey, artistic gymnastics, chess, auto-moto, figure skating, short track etc.

    The Bachelor’s programme requires 4 years of full-time study (8 semesters) and 5 years of part-time study (10 semesters). After passing the State exam the graduates receive a NSA high school diploma with a professional qualification - coach in the respective sport discipline. On this ground the student can continue his /her studies towards a Master’s degree.

    The duration of the Master’s programme is 3 semesters and entails the defense of a graduation thesis.

    Holders of Bachelor’s or Master’s degree can receive the Doctor’s degree after a 3-year full-time course of study or 4-year part-time course of study on the basis of an individual programme, leading to the defense of a Ph.D. thesis.

    The curriculum of the Faculty of Sports and the Faculty of Physical Education includes:

    · Obligatory courses, which provide basic knowledge of the specialty. These courses are: general theoretic (pedagogy, psychology, history of physical culture and sports); social (philosophy, sociology, foreign language); medical- biological (anatomy, biomechanics, biochemistry, physiology, sports medicine, hygiene); special (theory and methodology of sports training for each kind of sport and for the different sport disciplines, fundamentals of research, sports management, physiotherapy, track and field athletics, gymnastics, competitive games, rhythmic and dances, etc);

    · Elective courses, which the students are invited to choose according to their personal interests and individual needs (general economic theory, sport for all etc.);

    · Optional courses (Olympic movement, sports for different professions, concentration techniques, nutrition and sport, sports injuries etc).

    Master’s programmes

    For holders of Bachelor’s degree the NSA offers full-time, part-time and distance Master’s programmes in Sport with specialization in: “Sport”, “Sport Management”, “Sport Psychology”, “School Sport and Leisure-time Sport, “Sport Journalism”, “Sport Animation in Tourism” etc. The duration of the full-time programme is minimum 2 semesters and it entails 760 academic hours or 60 credits.


    FACULTY OF PHYSIOTHERAPY, TOURISM AND SPORT ANIMATION

    PHYSIOTHERAPY

    The 4-year university degree programme in Physiotherapy has been launched from 1947. Since then 50 batches of graduates- physiotherapists have been promoted – a considerable part of them from different foreign countries

    The 4-year full-time after secondary school and after university entrance examination graduate programme in Physiotherapy (BSc university degree in Physiotherapy) has been evolved for more then 50 years, but the basic concept has remained the same: physiotherapists should be able to conceptualize their treatment on the basis of clinical assessment and evaluation and be able to set up research project on their own.

    The graduates from the NSA speciality Physiotherapy may legally practice as full-fledged physiotherapists without limitation in Bulgaria.

    The Faculty of Physiotherapy, Tourism and Sport Animation at NSA – Sofia is a Member of the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education and a partner of respected European universities in TEMPUS and SOCRATES/ERASMUS projects.


    PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

    The 4-year BSc university degree programme in Physiotherapy (240 ECTS credits) is designed in five blocks of subjects/courses/modules:

    · BEHAVIOURAL and PHYSICAL EDUCATION SUBJECTS – provide the necessary background to understand human behavior (in health and disease); physical exercise and sport activities as a locomotory and psychosocial behavior and related pedagogical and psychological problems (in healthy people, patients, disabled); organization and evaluation of scientific research & medical statistics.

    · BASIC BIOLOGICAL and MEDICAL SUBJECTS – provide the necessary background for understanding the human body structure and function, also related to movements, physical exercise and sports, their benefits and jeopardy.

    · SPECIAL SUBJECTS – integrate knowledge on pathological processes and the impairment of function with the total holistic approach and in particular with the physiotherapy.

    · OPTIONAL SUBJECTS – provide possibilities for the student to satisfy his/her personal interests in the area of basic and special subjects.

    · SPECIALIZED PRACTICE – provides the student with the opportunity to integrate theoretical studies with supervised clinical practice (over 1500h part-time and full-time), also for clinical research required for course works and graduation thesis.

    For each section of the programme professors are recruited from their specific departments of the Academy. Pathology and Clinical Medicine subjects are tought by professors-medical doctors from the Faculty of Medicine – Sofia. Professional Physiotherapy topics are instructed by physiotherapists professors and lecturers PhD’s employed within NSA physiotherapy departments and the teaching hospitals. The higher academic level of the Faculty facilitates the integration of research into study programme.

    A three-year part-time bridge programme is available as a possibility for physiotherapists-graduates from 3-year colleges to upgrade to BSc in Physiotherapy university degree.

    Post-graduate MSc and PhD programmes and short-term continuing education courses are available as well.

    For holders of Bachelor’s degree the Faculty of Physiotherapy, Tourism and Sport Animation offers full-time, part-time and distance Master’s programmes in Physiotherapy with specilaisation in Phisiotherapy in Orthopaedy and Traumatology, Phisiotherapy in Neurology and Psychology, Phisiotherapy in Internal Deseases The duration of the full-time programme is minimum 2 semesters and entails 720 academic hours or 60 credits.

    The PhD programmes in Physiotherapy are individually designed.

    TOURISM AND SPORT ANIMATION The 4-year BSc university degree programme in Tourism and Sport Animation is designed in three blocks of courses:

    · Obligatory courses, which provide basic knowledge of the specialty. These courses are: general theoretic (pedagogy, psychology, history of physical culture and sports); social (philosophy, sociology, foreign language); medical- biological (anatomy, biomechanics, biochemistry, physiology, sports medicine, hygiene); special (theory and methodology of sports training for each kind of sport and for the different sport disciplines, fundamentals of research, sports management, physiotherapy, track and field athletics, gymnastics, competitive games, rhythmic and dances, etc), tourism, sport animation;

    · Elective courses, which the students are invited to choose according to their personal interests and individual needs (general economic theory, sport for all etc.);

    · Optional courses (Olympic movement, sports for different professions, concentration techniques, nutrition and sport, sports injuries etc).


    ABOUT NATIONAL SPORTS ACADEMY “VASSIL LEVSKI”



    The Higher Institute for Physical Culture (at present National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski”) – Sofia was founded as a university level educational institution graduating Physical Education Teachers and Sport Trainers. The Programme in Physiotherapy has been launched from 1947.

    The Higher Institute of Physical Training was founded by Decree of His Majesty Tzar Boris III in 1942. In 1967 the Sports Pedagogical Faculty and the Faculty for Group Physical Therapy and Remedial Physical Culture were set up. The aquatic sports training base was opened near Nessebar, the Black Sea, in 1972. The same year the United Centre for Science and Training of Specialist in the field of Physical Culture and Sport was established. In 1973 the Scientific Council certifying awarding of degrees in science were set up. The alpine training complex in Vitosha mountain was opened. In 1974 the specialized training of elite sportsmen - olympic, world and european champions - was introduced in the curriculum. Another alpine training complex in Borovetz, the Rila mountain was opened in 1986. In 1991 the Language Centre for preparatory training of foreign students was set up. In 1995 the Higher Institute of Physical Culture was renamed National Sports Academy by decision of the National Assembly. The new modern educational complex was inaugurated. As of 1996 the National Sports Academy started attributing the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" to distinguished persons with special contribution to science and sport.

    At present the National Sports Academy (NSA) - Sofia is the only higher educational establishment in Bulgaria in the field of physical culture and sport. The NSA is granted full state accreditation, offering university degree programmes (BSc, MSc, PhD) at three faculties:

    · Faculty of Physical Education;
    · Faculty of Sports;
    · Faculty of Physiotherapy, Tourism and Sport Animation.

    The Centre of Post-Graduate Studies at the NSA offers different post-graduate continuing education programmes in specialized and interdisciplinary fields (in Adapted Physical Activity as well).

    The NSA together with the Bulgarian Football Union is authorized by UEFA to train football coaches and issue License PRO which is valid for all levels football coaching.

    NSA distinguished itself by the fact that its teaching is based on its own research and interdisciplinary approach. Its programmes integrate professional training with research, promoting skills of identifying, formulating and solving problems, shaping learners for life – reflective graduates capable of analytic and creative thinking.

    With its top scientific potential the NSA deservedly plays the role of national centre for research and development in the field of physical culture and sport enjoying wide international prestige. NSA pays special attention to the training of young researchers within the framework of their doctoral studies. Besides writing the obligatory course and degree thesis students may take part in scientific circles with the respective chairs, in the activities of the discussions clubs, round tables on topical issues, R&D projects, annual internal conferences and events included in the calendar of the international scientific cooperation. The scientific activities are carried out in specialized R&D laboratories. The NSA computer network is linked to the national academic network and Internet.

    The best testimony of the scientific achievements of the NSA are the European, World and Olympic titles won by the Bulgarian athletes graduates of the Academy. They are as follows – 42 olympic titles, 150 silver and bronze olympic medals, 90 world champion titles and 120 silver and bronze medals at world championships.

    Nineteen NSA sports clubs /28 men and 18 women teams/ compete in national and international championships and tournaments.

    Situated in one of the most picturesque parts of Sofia, the NSA campus disposes of facilities of its own to carry out the training and scientific activities. The facilities cover 20 hectars and include as follows:

    · Three educational buildings with halls for lectures and workshops in Sofia, 14 indoor sports halls, the majority of which with artificial playground cover, 1 grass football stadium, 1 football pitch with tartan cover and 2 grass football pitches, 3 areas with artificial cover for track and field events with sectors for jumps, tennis courts, indoor area for track and field events, golf course, remedial physical culture gyms, methodological laboratories, 7 grand halls for lecturing;
    · an indoor swimming pool in Sofia with bodybuilding gym, sauna and tangentor;
    · two alpine training bases in Borovetz, the Rila mountain, and in the Vitosha mountain;
    · the sea base near Nessebar with a hotel compound with 450 beds, canteen, warf for boats, motor boats and sailing vessels;
    · rich library, three students' reading rooms and reading room for the teaching staff. A local computer network has been set up, providing direct library access to databases related to the different thematic areas;
    · students hostels and canteens;
    · medical and dentist’s offices.

    NSA is internationally opened and enjoys the interest of many foreign students. Students mainly from Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Macedonia, Zimbabwe etc. pursue their studies at the NSA to acquire Bachelor's, Master's or Doctor's degree.

    NSA is a partner of respected universities in TEMPUS and SOCRATES/ERASMUS/MINERVA/LEONARDO programmes of European integration in higher education. It is also a member of the Thematic Network of Sports, Thematic Network of Adapted Physical Activity and European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education. NSA maintains contacts and has contractual relations with many similar academic institutions from all over the world – Belgium, Germany, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Romania, Greece, the USA, France, Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa, Portugal, the Republic of Macedonia, Finland etc.

    The scientific achievements of the NSA researchers are internationally recognized. NSA specialists are honorary members of foreign academies. The NSA enjoys international prestige: it is not the foreign students willing to pursue their studies in the NSA alone; it is also the fact that many distinguished persons have received with gratitude the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" and they have undertaken to participate in a number of endeavours of the Academy among them being Mr. Simeon Sax Coburg-Gotha, Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, Marquis de Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr.Bruno Grandi, member of IOC, President of FIG, Mr. Egidius Braun, President of the German Football Union, Vice-President of UEFA, Mr. Franz Beckenbauer, Vice-President of the German Football Union, President of Football Club “Bayern’ – Munchen etc.
