    Faculty of Economics

The Faculty of Economics was founded in 1960 as a unit within the Urals State University In 1967, the unit was given autonomy and named the Sverdlovsk Institute of National Economy. In 1983, on the base of the chair of political economy the Faculty of Economics was recreated again as the first faculty in the Urals region training specialists skilled in Economics (Economic Theory). Today it remains the only faculty of higher education in economic theory in the Urals region and one in a five such kind of faculties in Russia.

The Faculty enrolls approximately 310 full-time students on the graduate programs in Economics and about 30 research students on the post graduate courses (Candidate Science(Economics) degree program). The number of students on these programs are sufficient to sustain a high level of activity, whilst small enough to maintain a friendly and informal atmosphere which is conducive both to effective and serious study and to creative research.

The Faculty of Economics employs 27 full-time teachers and 10 part-time teachers. Among them: 7 professors, Doctors of Sciences; 3 professors, Candidate of Sciences; 20 associate professors, Candidate of Sciences; 7 senior lecturers and instructors.

During last two years (1994-1995) teachers and scientists of the Faculty of Economics have got 8 prestige grants and prizes in Russian and international scientific competitions. The Faculty of Economics has mutual gainful agreements with universities from Germany, Belgium.

Several professors are included into boards of some international journals. Professor V. Mazurov is a member of the board of the journal "Pattern Recognition & Imagine Analysis" and "The International Journal of Software Engineering & Knowledge Engineering". Ass. Professor D.Nesterova is a member of the board "Journal for East European Management Studies" (Germany).

Main directions of research financed by international and Russian funds:
    1. Labor market and industrial relations in the transformation economy.
    2. Economic reforms and environment.
    3. Joint ventures and foreign investment in Russia.
    4. Marketing of high technology products.
    5. Consulting on investment decisions.
    6. Mathematical economics and optimization theory. Pattern Recognition.
    7. Decision science and computer modeling as applied to the real market predictions (stock market, medicine and biological products market, etc.)
    8. Economic Education.

The Faculty of Economics has 6 chairs: theoretical economy, economics and law, economic history and international economics, management, organizational and economic systems, economic modeling and information science.

The main principle of studying at the Faculty is combination of fundamental theoretical education in economics and development of special skills for work in new conditions of the market economy. Among basic economics courses there are Principles of Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Economic History, History of Economic Thought, Public Economics, Labor Economics, International Economics, Economics of Transition, Environmental Economics, Economics of Firm, Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Audit, Business Law, Personnel Management, Tax Policy, Economic Innovations, Strategic Management, etc.
